1978 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce 2000, 118k miles
This is a Monterey Peninsula car since its import in 1978. I have the original order form and bill of lading from Milan to Pacific Grove in 1978. As far as I can determine, I'm the 4th owner of this car.
The car runs wonderfully and is in very original condition throughout. Partial restorations have been completed over the years to keep her looking good, to inlcude the seats and the top. Everything is in good condition, though not in showroom new condition. All electricals work and have been sorted with the exception of the washer fluid pump. The previous owner indicated an engine rebuild within the last few years, and while I do not have any documentation as to the scope of the rebuild, the engine runs like a sewing machine.
Now for the bad. As mentioned, the washer fluid pump is burned out and will need replacing if that is of concern to you. I've never needed it myself. There are some minor dents and dings in the body work, but nothing that a competent body mechanic couldn't fix in short order. There are a few spots of surface rust, particularly on the rocker panels and around the rear wheel wells there are bubbles under the paint. I've had these checked out and none are structurally significant. All can be repaired and restored relatively easily. The rear shocks and/or springs may need replacing soon, though it drives fine and is safe to drive as is. There is a pin hole somewhere in the exhaust that I haven't been able to locate. This is evidenced by a light gurgling in the exhaust with trailing throttle...a bad driving habit anyway...
The title is a salvage title, though the vehicle has never been salvaged. As explained to me, this has something to do with the manner in which the car was imported (gray market?) at the time of sale. I've had several mechanics check the car out for any indications that the car might actually be a salvage and no such signs have been found.
Included with the sale are a number of extras including a toneau, the original stereo head, extra air filters, a K&N engine oil filter, a new SPICA fuel pump oil filter, a car cover, an 11x16 color laminated wiring diagram, a Wes Ingram SPICA manual, and a period magazine ad for a '79 Alfa Spider.
I'll also throw in an extra SPICA fuel injection pump for another $100. I bought this with the intention of tearing it down and rebuilding it to learn about the engineering behind this mechanical work of art.
This is a 30 year old car and is not showroom perfect, but for its age it is both in surprisingly good shape and surprisingly original. I get complements from people in the know wherever I go.
I'm averaging 20mpg, though I get 23mpg highway when I drive any distance.
This is a classic California summer car. Fun, refined, stylish, affordable and an absolute blast to drive. Get it now for the summer season!!!
Make me an offer, I'm willing to negotiate for a quick sale.
