1965 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint For Sale

1965 Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1300 Sprint
Rare (One of 1900 built in 1964-'65). Restoration Project w/1600 and 5 Speed.

Introduced in 1954, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint definitely raised the bar for refinement in a production sports car. It came with race bred features like an all aluminum twin cam 1300cc 4 cylinder, big finned aluminum brakes, and a fully synchronized 4 speed transmission. The level of sophistication made the contemporary MGs, Healeys, and Triumphs seem absolutely archaic with overhead valve iron block powerplants, no 1st gear synchros, and iron drum brakes. Today, a well sorted Giulietta Sprint is one of the tightest and well balanced vintage sports cars on the road.

In fact, Alfa Romeo thought so highly of the 1300cc engine in the Giulietta that it re birthed it in 1964 with the Giulietta 1300 Sprint. This was also a neat ploy to avoid taxation in Italy for the larger 1600cc Giulia. The car came with all of the features of the then-current Giulia 101 1600 Sprint, except for the smaller drive train. Most notable of those features was front disc brakes, never before supplied on a Giulietta, except for the last of the Sprint Zagatos. From 1964-65 Alfa built a total of just 1900 of these Giuliettas, like the one offered here.

This is a rough restoration project. It has been stored since 1988, and has not run since. It was originally red, and has been repainted white.

Here is the firewall stamped vin number.

Here is the type ID plate. The car is very complete and has some interesting documentation.

Included with this Giulietta is the original Italian bill of sale..........

.....the homologation certificate...

....and the early Italian registration log book.....all very rare documents!

The engine in the car is a 105 series 1600cc from a GTV.

This is the engine number that is in the car.

It has a single Solex and the stock air cleaner.....

...which still has this cool little tag on it.

A 5 speed transmission is installed. The engine turns freely by hand, but has not been fired in 20 years. The entire fuel system will need a thorough cleaning before attempting to start the engine.

This 1300cc engine was with the car and is probably the original one, although the last two digits of the engine number are reversed on the paperwork shown above (a dyslexic clerk perhaps?). It is missing the oil pan. This engine turns freely by hand and will be included with the car.

This Sprint shares the dash layout with it's sister Giulia 101 Sprints. It is a beautiful and functional dash with the drop down glove box, similar to the Sprint Speciale. There is a rust hole just visible to the right of the glove box. All of the switches and gages are present, as well as the original dash mirror. The steering wheel is aftermarket. The transmission cover carpeting is original.

The mileage shows 61,065 but is unknown if it is original. As you can see here, the gages are nice and not faded.

The rear of the interior is totally original upholstery and needs a refurbishment. Note the cool original diamond pattern on the parcel shelf bottom.

The floor is covered in a mix of replacement and original carpet. The original dark grey carpet still covers the driveshaft tunnel and here behind the driver's seat. The darker carpet is not original.

The visors and interior dome lights are present. The original headliner is ripped and needs replacing.

This is the passenger door panel, totally original but in need of recovering.

Here is the underside of the door showing some minor rust.

The driver's door is not as nice. The window glass is broken out, but the winder mechanism is there. The window crank handle is missing.
The following photos will document the rough underside of this Giulietta. As you will see, it will need a lot of metal work due to rust.

This is the left front underside. The rockers and jacking point are very rusty.

Here is the left rear underside, same deal.

Here is the right front underside. Some metal has been replaced, but not correctly.

Here is the right rear underside showing needs here.

Just visible below the vent hole, there is some odd rust. There is some amateur fiberglass repair work on the underside of this hole. There is also a bit of rust on the closing edge of the engine compartment and fender, in the corner.

The body itself has some issues, although it doesn't appear to have ever had a serious accident.

Neither door closes well. The passenger door has a broken latch.

The left door needs a hinge replaced. The left front fender has a lot of bondo and lead in it.

Here it is with a closer look. A sleek Talbot racing mirror is installed on the driver's door.

The front chrome trim is in very nice condition. The bumper and side grills are straight and rust/pit free. The grill has a couple of minor dings.

Both headlight rings are the correct original Carello units.

The rear bumper has decent chrome but needs straightening where the trailer ball was.......One license light is missing. The reflector below the left tail light is off, but comes with the car. The license frame is the rare European style for the Italian plate.

Tail light lenses are both brand new repro Euro style with amber turn signals. The left side has a small crack in it.

The trunk, showing the original floor mat. There is no jack or spare.

The trunk floor is surprisingly solid, with the problem area on the left side.

Here it is with a closer look.

The battery tray is still semi-intact. There is some cheesy fiberglass here.

Here is the same area from underneath. All 4 tires are New Old Stock Pirelli Cinturato CN36s in 175/70 15. They have never been driven on, but they are older and their roadworthiness is not guaranteed.

Here is a view down the left side.

And here, down the right side.

This is the left rear fender lip, needing a small amount of rust repair.

And this is the right rear with the same needs.
With all that documenting of the body work needed out of the way, enjoy the following photos of different angles of this beautiful design:

As you know restored Giulietta Sprints are now over $30,000. We recently sold a non-running Giulietta Sprint on eBay for $26,600. The reserve on this rare disc-brake Giulietta is set low enough to make it a worthwhile project. It has incredible documentation, a 1600 with a 5 speed, the extra 1300 engine and lot's of potential. Get it now and restore this beautiful Alfa Romeo correctly, the way it deserves to be done.
