Rare 2600 Spider (106 Series) The 2600 Series was introduced in 1962 as an upgrade for the old 2.0 liter cars. The body and chassis were obvious carryovers with minor trim changes, but the engine was a new design-a big, hefty, high-rpm twin cam six that showed much Giulietta influence. It represented a deliberate move by Alfa Romeo back toward the larger sports-touring market it had abandoned with its smaller but highly successful four-cylinder models. Technically interesting and appealing to the eye ... only 2,255 Spiders were produced and production ended in 1968...the 2600 offered surprisingly strong performance at higher speeds. The handsome 2600 Spider was one of Alfa's smoothest, most comfortable roadsters. The Touring body was every bit as well-constructed and good-looking as the similar Maserati roadsters of the same period. At the beginning of the muscle-car era in the United States, the subtleties of such an elegant touring maching were simply not appreciated. Yet at approximately $5,000 for the Spider..these cars were incredible bargains: I consider it one of my major car-buying oversights not to have purchased one at the time. ...Joe Benson, The Illustrated Alfa Romeo Buyer's Guide, 2nd Ed. This particular car is a 1965 that is in need of a total restoration. I recently brought it in from California where it was stored indoors for many years. I too have it stored safely indoors but the reality is that I will never get to it, with all my other projects. My loss=your gain. These rarely come onto the market and here is your chance to buy a straight, clean example. It has rust in some of the usual areas-at each end of the rocker panel- but it is very solid and straight. The car is very straight and is an excellent starting point for a fairly straight-forward restoration. The car rolls and steers but has not been started in years. The undercarriage has some surface rust but nothing major. The running gear is surprisingly clean and should clean up easily. Everything is there except the interior and the front grilles. All the gauges, all of the lamps, all of the exterior badges and trim etc. The engine bay and trunk are surprisingly devoid of rust! The engine-bay looks like it could be fired up with a few minutes of attention. It is not rusty or heavily corroded! The engine turns freely and is well preserved. The original steering wheel is in great shape. The seat frames are there as is the soft-top frame. Obviously no vinyl or interior. Don't miss this chance to buy a very rare luxury tourer with great Italian appeal!
