The Complete History:
This was going to be my High School dream truck. The plan was to build a 79 GMC short box, with a 454 and 3/4 ton running gear. My motto was all parts had to be rebuilt, new, or better! Plus everything had to get a fresh coat of paint before it was installed. I poured 4 years of my heart and sole into building this chassis, along with the help of my Grandpa and Dad. No expense was spared, which is probably why I never finished it... When I left for college in 1998 I stored it in my grandpa’s garage, unfortunately for him it has been there ever since. Now he wants it gone and incidentally I need the money to by my first house.
It started out as a 1979 GMC short box that I stripped down to the rivets to turn into a show truck. Once I had the frame completely stripped I had it sand blasted, primed and painted satin black. It has a few scratches in the paint now from Grandpa storing boxes on it but there's definitely no rust to worry about. Once the frame was done I added a 2 1/2" Skyjacker suspension lift with all new grade 8 bolts and poly bushings. It has Skyjacker Nitro shocks with duals in the front and dual Skyjacker-Hydro steering stabilizers too. The Dana 44 3/4 ton front axle has new king pins, new axle u-joints, new wheel bearings, wheel seals, brake calipers, pads, and stainless steel brake lines. The gears are 4:10 front & rear with open differentials. I didn't replace the gears because they were good but I did have both front and rear pinion seals replaced to make sure there were no leaks. The rear axle is a 3/4 ton Corporate 14 bolt that has turned drums, new brake shoes, and cylinders, and stainless steel brake lines. Both differentials have chrome covers with Allen-head bolts, and are full of Amsoil Full Synthetic 85W-90 Gear Lube.
The engine is a fully built 454. I wanted a stump pulling bullet proof truck engine so I built it with the following. The block is a 2-bolt that was lined honed, decked and torque plate bored .030 over. It had a forged steel crank in it that we turned .010's on the rods and mains. It has heavy duty 7/16" bolt connecting rods and Hypereutectic flat top pistons with molly file fit rings. A high volume oil pump completes the bottom end. The heads are early 70's oval port truck heads, from what I'm told they are the 2nd best flowing oval port heads that Chevy made. The heads got the usual treatment with a 3 angle valve job with nearled guides. I picked the 268H comp cam for its performance from 1500-6500 RPM. Then I topped off the heads with 400 lb Comp Cams dual springs and retainers with 10 degree locks. The intake is an Edelbrock performer. It has a new remanufactured HEI ignition with 8 mm Malory cut to fit plug wires (not cut yet). It also has a new water pump, new radiator hoses and a rebuilt 4 core radiator. It comes with the power steering pump and alternator brackets and pulleys too. The fuel system has all new lines, a new tank switch (from left to right) new filters and a new fuel pump. The headers are Chrome Doug Horely Tri-Y's. The exhaust is all aluminized (rust free) pipe. It’s a custom 2 1/2" dual setup with H-pipe and Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers for that nice rumble. I made sure they tucked it up into the chassis so it wouldn’t drag in the mud. The valve covers and air cleaner cover are Edelbrock Elite pieces. All the engine needs now is a 650 or 750 cfm Edelbrock carb. The engine has been run for 1/2 hour to brake in the cam. After that I changed the oil and the filter with Valvoline 10W-40. Since then my brother stole the new carb (hence the engine lifting plate). I knew the engine would be sitting for a while when I stored it at my Grandpa's so I pulled the rocker arms off to keep the valve springs from going bad so this engine is as good as new. Rocker arms and push rods are stock and they are included. I almost forgot the motor mounts are new too.
The tranny is a built TH350 tranny with a mild shift kit. The mechanic said it would be bullet proof with 5 clutches per pack. It also has a stock corvette torque converter that will produce 2200 RPM of stall. The tranny cooler lines are connected to the radiator and it is full of Amsoil Full Synthetic transmission fluid too. The NP205 transfer case was fully rebuilt with all new bearings, and seals and you guessed it, it also has Amsoil Full Synthetic in it. The transfer case also comes with the original shifter and boot. I never got around to getting the drivelines rebuilt but the original ones do come with the chassis.
Lastly the steering gear box was fully rebuilt and it has the drop pitman arm installed. The tie rod ends on the front axle are new. The drag link that goes between the steering box and the axle is not rebuilt but it does come with the chassis.
Basically you are looking at an almost turn key drive train that will fit under any Chevy/GMC Short box truck made from 1973-87. Plus people have used this year of chassis under many 1950-70’s trucks and all sorts of other weird projects. I'm interested to see where this one will end up.
Good luck bidding!!!
