Vehicle Description

1964 Chevrolet Corvair Monza 2-Door Club Coupe

This vehicle has a beautiful fresh coat of paint and has regular upkeep on everything else.

The inside black vinyl is in good shape. The floor carpet is new.

There is an original radio that works. Dash has full original instrumentation. the odometer has stopped though.

The chrome is mostly in good shape save for one old sticker spot on back bumper which rusted in a small square.

We've just had the brakes done and a complete tune-up and detail.

All in all a great car and don't want to give it up but not enough room to store it anymore.

This Corvair is powered by an air-cooled six-cylinder engine, a first for Chevrolet, it was referred to as a "flat six," since the cylinders were horizontally opposed. It was also mounted in the rear like the VW.

The Corvair pioneered such technological advances as turbo-charging, true four-wheel independent suspension and unit-body (or unibody) construction, and its independent suspension was adapted for later model Corvettes.

Significant engineering and safety changes occurred in 1964, while the bodies and models available remained the same.

The lineup remained relatively unchanged for the 1964 model year, with the exception of the engine growing from 145 to 164 in³ (2.3 to 2.7 L) due to an increase in stroke; the base power growing from 80 to 95 hp (60 to 70 kW), and the high performance engine growing from 95 to 110 hp (70 to 80 kW).

1964 also saw a critical improvement in the Corvair's suspension; the car's swing axle rear suspension was tamed by use of an additional transverse leaf spring carrying a high proportion of the rear weight, in an effort to diminish rear roll stiffness and foster more neutral handling attributes.
Spring rates were much softer at both ends of the car in 1964 compared to previous models, and the heavy duty suspension was no longer optional, although all models now had an (even larger) front anti roll bar standard. Brakes were mildly improved by finned rear drums.

Ralph Nader's book "Unsafe At Any Speed" portrayed the 1960-1963 Corvair as unstable and prone to rollover accidents. Even the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration had opened an investigation into its handling. Ironically, the NHTSA report, released three years after Corvair's demise, would exonerate Chevrolet of all charges, concluding that the Corvair was no more prone to accidents and rollovers than any other comparable car of the period.

Because of that there were no manza Corvairs made after 1965, Chevy having come out with a dramatic redesign looking considerable different and a precurser of the future chevy camaro in 1966, and not as many models sold due to the bad publicity, it makes this car a true classic, rare and hard to find in this good of condition.

A great find for any collector!!

On May-13-08 at 13:33:35 PDT, seller added the following information:

There were Corvair Manza's of a different style body made after 1964, but none with what was called the A style, they changed to what was called the Z style.
