1971 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu
HISTORY 1971 CHEVROLET MALIBU Chevrolet Chevelle and Malibu The 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle and Chevrolet Malibu family came in quite a variety of models: hardtop coupe or sedan, pillared sedan, station wagons, and a convertible. The 1971 Chevrolet Malibu was counted as a series within the 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle model line, while Chevelle also offered four station wagons in Nomad, Greenbrier, Concours, and elegant Concours Estate trim. The 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle and Chevrolet Malibu got fresh front-end styling that included large Power-Beam single-unit headlights, a reworked grille and bumper, and integral park/signal/marker lights. New dual round taillights were integral with the back bumper. Performance-minded shoppers with thinner wallets could choose an SS 350 with a 245-horsepower 350-cubic-inch V-8 under the hood or an optional 270 horsepower upgrade. THIS PARTICULAR 1971 CHEVROELT MALIBU The best way to describe this 1971 California Malibu? Well, in the most positive sense, this is Grandma's car at its best. This example is totally unmolested, almost 100% original and, best of all, the Malibu has spent all of its life in dry, Northern California. It is an extremely well cared for example that was maintained by Mr. B. until his recent passing at almost 90 years of age. The Malibu is now being sold by the sons of the original owner (Widow) since Mrs. B. is no longer able to drive the Chevrolet. Of course, the car has always been garaged and well cared for by Mr. B. who followed the recommended service and mechanical suggestions from Bay area repair facilities. Also, the car was delivered at McCullough Chevrolet in San Leandro (no longer in business) and has remained within 30 miles for al of its life. Of interest in the presence of the original dealer brochures including one with hand written notes by one of the sons that were made to list the options that were being considered along with their respective pricing. This document is shown in the photos and lists the final options that they agreed upon when the car was purchased. Specifically, it shows the following equipment / prices for the Malibu: Vehicle Price: $2,975.00 Standard Interior: $19.00 Deluxe Seat Belts: $ 16.90 Door Edge Guards: $6.35 Vinyl Roof: $94.50 Automatic Transmission: $216.50 Power Steering: $115.90 Whitewall Tires $28.15 Wheel Covers: $26.35 Clock: $16.90 Radio Speaker: $15.80 Lighting Package: $ 21.10 Destination Charge: $204.00 Grand Total = $3,892.70 It is interesting to note that EVERY option listed remained on the car and in very good, original condition (including the original hubcaps (and an extra for the spare!), door edge guards, vinyl top, original belts, etc. HIGHLIGHTS - 1971 CHEVROLET MALIBU Original, original, original. Consider the following: * The Malibu was delivered new in Northern California and has remained here ever since * NO rust through in the body, trunk, rocker panels, floors, etc. * One owner car - True "Little Old Lady" Car!! * Low mileage with 107,906 original one owner miles * Desirable '71 2 door Malibu coupe (Great styling!) * Extremely straight body * Beautiful California exterior trim * Excellent exterior chrome / trim * Very nice original interior (front seat reupholstered with factory style materials) * Totally rust free trunk * Original spare wheel, jack and even an extra matching hubcap for spare! * Factory vinyl top in excellent condition * Original glass including * Original (front & rear) blue & yellow California license plates * Totally unmodified, unmolested * Original engine / 350 cubic inch V8 - Very strong running car * Automatic transmission * Power steering * Factory AM (Functional) AM radio * Factory brochure with original purchase notes * Original California "pink slip" in original owner's name CONDITION REPORT - 1971 CHEVROLET MALUBU BODY & TRIM The body is a lovely shade of crème/beige with a light tan/beige interior and a dark brown vinyl top (very typical of the era). The car carries its original factory colors and, in fact, most of the original paint, the original and top are still on the car and in good condition. This car is a true "Survivor" and will be appreciated by someone that is interested in originality, not a restored, show level car. The body of this 1971 Chevy is totally free from any signs of rust or major damage, both on top of the car, as well as on the underside. There is no rust in the typical areas, including the rocker panels, trunk, rear fenders, front valance, and bottom of the doors. Additionally, the rocker panels and the front and rear lower fenders do not show the usual curb damage or abuse from hitting low objects. These areas on the car are straight, clean and in excellent condition. There are no significant dents/body damage on the Malibu. It does of course have the characteristic door dings and chips/nicks that we typically see on a car of this vintage. However, for an original car the car shows very well, indeed. The photographs accurately reflect the excellent, original condition of the body. The paint is still glossy and free from major damage, significant fading, or problems. While most of the paint is original, the hood does show signs of being touched up although we can find no evidence of accident damage. We suspect that the upper portion of the hood was repainted due to fading. The undersides of the trunk and engine are all original and show no signs of damage, leaking or having been repainted. The exterior of the Malibu is in very nice condition. The bumpers are in very good condition, have excellent original chrome and are free from pitting and damage. They are even devoid of the typical light, surface rust that is found on even the cleanest, most rust free car of from the 1960's. Any minor flaws/imperfections do not detract form the overall appearance of the Malibu and, in fact, many observers believe that they add to the "patina" of this one owner, low mileage, California car. The exterior trim is best classified as excellent, original "California" (a very good thing!) condition. That is to say that unlike cars found in the Midwest and East Coast, there is virtually no rust on the bumpers, exterior trim, or body. In fact, the trim that surrounds the upper portion of the car is very good and virtually free from dents and dings, and is in beautiful condition. The chrome and stainless surrounding the side windows, vent windows, tail lights, etc. are all in nice condition and free from pitting and damage. The plastic trim and other exterior moldings are free from damage and in very good condition, as well. The side windows are free from cracks and damage, and operate perfectly. The front windshield is free from any cracks, stars or damage. The Malibu is equipped with factory stock wheel covers as was correct for the era. The wheel covers are in very good overall condition with only a few minor dings/imperfections. The tires are a matched set of Dunlop radials that are in serviceable condition and very inexpensive to replace when the time comes. INTERIOR A careful review of the photographs of the interior reveals the excellent of condition of the totally stock, unmodified interior of the Malibu. The interior is very original and in truly amazing condition, considering the age and originality of the Chevy Malibu. This is true of the front seats, rear seats, door panels, dash and interior trim pieces. The carpet is also in very good original condition ad does not appear to have been replaced/restored. It is has usual, minor wear and some typical, minor fading in spots, but no rips, or tears. The front and rear areas are covered by floor mats that enhance the overall appearance of the interior areas. The top of the dash is finished in a coordinating gold color and it is in excellent condition, free from cracks, splits, or damage. It is rare, indeed that we see a mid-60's car with a damage free dash pad/dash, but that is the case with this Chevelle. The side door panels are in very good original condition, and have never had any speakers mounted. The seat belts are factory original (including optional harnesses that do not appear to have been used), free of any significant fraying or damage, as are the receiving parts of the seat belt units. The car has the factory optional, column mounted automatic transmission. The door sills and door jambs are clean and free from dirt and grease. The car is fitted with the original AM radio playing through the stock speaker and it is fully functional. The trunk is VERY clean and rust free and contains the original spare wheel (and a later model tire), the original factory jack and tool. The trunk area is very clean and there is no evidence of water leakage, rust, or damage. The trunk area has not been re-done or covered up. It is totally rust free, solid and clean. The trunk "spring" is not functional so the trunk is held up by a wooden stick (included). ENGINE & MECHANICAL CONDITION When it comes to drivability, this particular Chevy Malibu runs and drives very well. The car has excellent performance fro a small displacement V8 and is as strong as any that we can remember driving. We attribute this to a combination of excellent care, coupled with low, original, well cared for miles (fewer than 3,000 miles per year since new!). The car is surprisingly fun to drive and exhibits absolutely no mechanical, or drivability problems. The car starts immediately when cold and hot and runs cool, even in warm 100 degree California temperatures. We recently drove the Malibu on a local trip around town and the car ran exceptionally well. Of course, the Chevy is exempt form California's new, strict smog check, based on its age (most, if not all other states, will exempt the car as well). We ask that you check your local regulations regarding smog requirements in your state/country. There are no issues with the engine, it does not smoke, leak, or exhibit any problems. The Chevy Malibu idles smoothly, does not hesitate, have any unusual noises or issues. . We were told by son of the owner's of the car that their father (Mr. B.) always maintained the car extremely well and had the maintenance/repairs completed by professionals. They also indicated that the car was always kept in excellent running condition, never stored or left unused for extended periods of time. Unfortunately, with the passing of their father, Mrs. B discarded all of the records (automotive and otherwise) so the Malibu has to stand on its own merits when it comes to the mechanical strength of the car. The transmission is excellent and shifts are smooth and precise. There is no slippage, noise or problems with the transmission. The car has power steering and due to the relatively small size of the car it stops well and is easy to drive with the manual braking system. The car passed the last safety inspection and all of the recommended work/servicing (above) was completed. The emergency brake is functional and correctly adjusted. The engine and engine bay is also all original and complete with what appear to be mot of the original (outside of tune-up parts, etc) components in place. The air cleaner, valve covers and other parts are correct to the car and no modifications have been made to the carburetion, exhaust, intake, etc. The engine has not been detailed to prepare the car for sale but is actually quite clean and free from excessive amounts of grease, oil and fluids, and grease. It shows the same level of care that the exterior, interior and trunk areas reflect. WHAT ISN"T STOCK ON THIS MALIBU? Well, we're hard pressed to find too much outside of those parts that were replaced as part of the restoration in order to make the car reliable and bring it to the highest level from a cosmetic perspective. With the exception of mechanical improvements, this car is truly incredibly stock in virtually every respect. However, a few notes about recent changes: * The exhaust system is relatively new (refer to the photographs) * Replacement battery (approximately 1 year old) * The front seat has been reupholstered with very similar, factory style material and is in excellent condition Well, that's it. We can't come up with other items that are modified or do not have the appearance of those that would have been on the car when it was new in 1971. We certainly welcome input from those who view our listing and will be glad to answer any questions about this great Malibu. OPPORTUNITY AREAS We are always asked "What does it need"? Well, frankly, in the case of the Malibu it is difficult to come up with a list of the things that the Malibu needs. It is totally "turn key", ready to use and enjoy. The following area of opportunity represent a very critical assessment of a few of the things that would bring the car to an even higher level (we found that coming up with a lengthy list was very difficult). * The heater core is disconnected, so the heater is not functional. * There are two "soft spot" on the rear lower roof (under the vinyl top) but it is very important to note that there is NO evidence of leaking into the trunk, or rust damage on the painted surface/body. In fact, until you poke around the vinyl top, you cannot even see these spots. There is no bubbling on the top, nor are there any raised areas on the vinyl top and the top itself is excellent. Personally, we would not address this issue. * The left side) driver's door) arm rest has been taped (difficult to see in the photos) as a result of wear on the door handle. This could easily be replaced with either an NOS (New Old Stock) part, recovered, or replaced with a good used part. * While the large majority of the paint on the Malibu is original, there are a few areas that have had touch up. Most notable are parts of the upper surface of the hood. There do not appear to be any replaced or previously damage body parts and the panels on the car are very straight. We expect that any minor painting was done due to slight fading / discoloration of the paint over the years (the sons of the owner's were actually unaware of ANY re-painting of the Malibu. MISCELLANEOUS ADDITIONAL INFORMATION * We have had very good success utilizing UShip.com in locating transporters (especially for relatively short distances), and recommend giving them a try. For long distance enclosed transport we recommend Showtime Motorsports (strictly enclosed) for competitive national (USA) moves. * For International buyer's, we can assist with all USA arrangements and have sources for shipping to Europe and all other parts of the world. As an example, shipping to major Ports in Europe can be accomplished for as low as $1400.00 (USD). Please call us for specific pricing to the closest Port to your location. * As with virtually all collector/specialty vehicles, we find that parts and resources are readily available for this (and most every vehicle), thanks in large part to the Internet! * in addition to the purchase price of the vehicle, California buyers will be subject to sales tax, documentation fee, DMV transfer fees and license/registration. Out-of-state buyers will be responsible for the purchase price of the vehicle and any local taxes/fees will be bear responsibility to pay in their respective state. IMPORTANT NOTE: if the vehicle is delivered or driven in California and driven on California roads, sales-tax, license registration and transfer fees will be assessed per California law. * While we encourage telephone calls to discuss this vehicle in greater detail we will not respond to inquiries asking "what is the reserve'? Also, if you would prefer that we call you to answer any questions about the vehicle; shipping alternatives, etc. please e-mail us with your telephone number and will gladly get back in touch with you. * As with any collectible vehicle of this vintage we are unable to provide a warranty or guarantee of condition. However, we make every effort to accurately represent our vehicles, and highlight both positive items as well as areas that require attention. We ask that prospective buyers consider our EBay history/feedback (User name never22many), standing in the community, length of time in business, and other factors when purchasing a collectible vehicle from Classic Cars Ltd. * Please keep in mind that, as with any used vehicle, minor cosmetic issues/flaws may be present that add to the "patina" of the car and are a part of even the best restoration, or even a relatively new, used "pre-owned" vehicle. Also, ownership of a part of American automotive history (or any other type vehicle, for that matter) is more enjoyable if the owner is familiar with the "realities" of these unique cars. Unlike more modern day vehicles, these cars require regular, ongoing care/maintenance and some mechanical knowledge, patience, and understanding can make the experience considerably more pleasant. That said, Chevrolet owner's will tell you (emphatically) that they love their cars and wouldn't trade them for anything!! PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER As always, we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background of any collector car being sold over the Internet. We believe that it is important to ask yourself a number of questions including, but not limited to: - How long have they been in business? - How much experience do they have with collector cars? - How many positive collector car vehicle sales have completed (positive EBay feedback)? - How detailed/complete is the description of the vehicle? - Do the photos show details of the interior, exterior, top, chrome, etc. or are they simply "Glamour Shots" taken from a distance? - Does the seller have a surety bond to protect the financial transaction? - What about insurance, licensing by the state, and a local business license? - Does the seller (if a business) have any DMV (Motor Vehicle) complaints and/or other history of legal action, grievances? - Do they enjoy a favorable local and national/international reputation? - Can the seller assist with funding sources, transport and out of state/country sales?
