As the restorer and owner of a number of 1963 Impala SS cars, including an AACA Senior Winner, I can honestly that I love these cars. To me, they epitomize early 1960's styling and performance, and hint at what was to come as the muscle car era got ready to rock 'n roll. This particular 1963 Impala is one of the finest restored 1963's I've ever laid eyes on.
A true, numbers matching 1963 Impala SS, with its original 327/300 HP engine and a real factory 4-speed car, this Impala had the good fortune of spending most of its life in Tennessee. This Impala was ordered new by George Bradley of Afton, TN, and purchased from Sam Riley Chevrolet. Present with the Impala is a notarized letter from Mr. Bradley, which verifies this car to be an original SS, 327, 4 speed car, finished in red with a red interior! Mr. Bradley's new Impala so impressed the girl he was dating, while a senior at East Tennessee State University, that she just had to marry him! As Chevy fans know, documented 1963 Impala SS cars are a rarity.
Let's get the numbers out of the way! The VIN number verifies this car is a real V8 Impala, but a 1963 VIN does not tell us anymore than this. The original trim tag tells us that the paint code of 922 equates to Ember Red. As well, the trim code of 875 equates to a red vinyl bucket seat interior.
The engine pad reads F040IRB, which equates to a 327/300 HP engine, 4 barrel engine, hydraulic cam & manual transmission. The engine casting number is 3782870, which translates to a 327, 62-67, 250/375, 2 bolt main. The engine date is C273, which equates to March 27, 1963. The intake, carburetor & exhaust manifolds are all correct for the car.
The trans case number is 3831704, which equates to a 1963 only M20/M21. The transmission number, next to the side cover, is P03 18, which equates to Muncie, March 18th. The starter and bell housing are also date code correct. The rear axle code is BM0311 X 3789812, with an axle date of C1 63. As evidenced by these numbers, this is a true, numbers matching SS.
The recipient of an 18 month, rotisserie restoration, the Impala is done to an extremely high standard, and would easily achieve gold status at any Classic Chevy event. Only 126 miles have been placed on the car since the restoration was completed last year.
The body on this Impala is incredible! Perfectly straight, with better than factory panel gaps, which is very difficult to achieve on a '63, due to the long straight panels. The car was painted in the original and correct Ember Red, with a PPG base coat/clear coat, and wet-sanded & buffed to a mirror finish. The result is spectacular ... truly a show car finish.
Equally impressive is the chrome ...every single piece of exterior chrome has been done to a high standard, including the bumpers, emblems, door handles, antennae bezel and hood emblem. Like wise, all stainless steel and bright-work is perfect, including the grill, headlight bezels, hood bar molding, windshield trim, drip rail moldings, window trim, SS side moldings and inserts, tail panel molding, and tail light bezels and lenses. All glass in the Impala is correct replacement date-coded glass, and perfect.
The Impala rolls on American Racing Products 17x8 Torque Thrusts, mated to B F Goodrich G-Force T/As, 245/45ZR17. We are an American Racing dealer, and if you would prefer a different set of wheels on this Impala, we can do a straight up swap for any other set of American Racing Products wheels.
Visually, this is a stunning car ... the kind of car that makes you do a double-take. There is very little, if anything, that could be done to improve the appearance of this Impala!
The trunk area is expertly restored, complete with a correct B F Goodrich Silvertown 7.00x14 spare, correct jack, new trunk mats, a 1963 shop manual, and a reproduction 1963 owner’s manual.
The red Vinyl interior in this Impala nearly bests the exterior. All of the following items have been replaced or restored: door panels; pedal pads; window cranks; quarter-window cranks; armrest bases; armrest pads; door handles; steering wheel; dashboard; instrument cluster; vinyl bucket seat covers & foams; vinyl rear seat cover & foam; carpeting; carpet mats; center console; shifter console; ash trays; rear speaker; sill plates, and; headliner. The only deviation from stock in this Impala are the three tastefully mounted guages, to keep track of the oil pressure, water temperature and battery. Definite must haves if you are going to drive a high dollar muscle car! The interior is absolutely spectacular and showroom new!
The engine compartment in this SS is done to a very high level, with immense attention to detail. The original 327/300 HP engine has been fully rebuilt to stock specs, and all visible components are stock and correct. A true power steering car, the power steering pump has been rebuilt, with all new hoses and lines. The original M21 4 speed transmission is also fully rebuilt, and functions as new.
The undercarriage of the Impala is highly detailed and completely new, with painted/restored frame rails, floor pans, and trunk pan. The front and rear suspension has been fully rebuilt, and functions as new. To make sure this Impala stops, the power drum braking system has been fully rebuilt, with new drums, pads, stainless steel lines, hoses and master cylinder. Likewise, the fuel tank has been replaced, along with the sending unit, and stainless steel fuel lines.
Correctly done, numbers matching, high quality cars are selling like hot-cakes right now, as the hobby is maturing, and suspect/bogus/poorly done cars are being avoided. This is a true investment grade car, which will bring years of enjoyment, while continuing to appreciate in value. This 1963 Impala SS has all of the right stuff and is done right! Don't pass on this one!
