I bought from a friend of friend about a year ago and the history from him was that this was a U of M project car which explains the coloring (yellow/dark blue). The car has -
- 280 Engine - Rebuilt with about 1,500 miles - Four speed tranny
- New cam - 460 270/280
- Head has new springs, retainers, and rockers. Polished and ported squareport with 3 way valve job
- New thermostat - You can let this thing idle all day in the summer sun and it won't get hot at all
- New waterpump
- Heavy duty rod bolts
- Turbo head studs
- Stage one clutch with new fork and collar and roller pilot bearing
- Turbo flywheel
- MSA lowering springs
- 6-2-1 headers
- Bob Sharp intake
- Holley 390 carb - Runs great but I'm not very good at tuning carbs and it has a slight hickup sometimes when you accelerate from cruise. Doesn't hickup out of the hole at all.
- Hy-Fire ignition
- MSA performance swaybars - the rear is welded in
- Summit 10 gallon fuel cell
- New rotors with Toyota caliper upgrade
- New master brake cylinder
- Bump steer spacers
- Front strut bar
- 6 point roll cage with frame supports - I cut out the door bars for easy in and out. They can easily be welded back in.
- New pans and rails
- Urethane bushings
- Spare windshield - The one on the car is cracked
- Spare 280zx hood with vents and spare piece that goes where the windshield wipers come out (the one on the car has some rust)
- Headlights are new - bright blue/white
- New 90 amp Maxima alternator
- New tires with about 30 miles on them
- Fender flairs molded in - Someone did a really good job on these
- Wheel spacers to position the tires
- Aftermarket glass front bumper
- Grant steering wheel
- I didn't measure the exhaust pipe, but it's large diameter
Car will need -
- Stereo is there but not working
- Enclosure for the back where the fuel tank is - after awhile, it'll gas you out and it's noisy right now
- Could use a new differential front mount - I'm not sure what these are called, but it is common for these to go bad and let the front of the diff move under accel and make a clunking noise. It's a cheap part.
- Headlights need a relay
- Fuel level sending unit
- Drivers side window needs to be installed - I have it along with the door liner
- I don't know if the heater works - never checked
- Paint - I've painted cars and this one would be fairly easy
- Interior work - The tach is an aftermarket to work with the high fire and is rigged into the dash along with a fuel/air ratio gauge - both are new
I'm sure I forgot some items, so remember that this is an old car, but if someone wants an easy restore this would be it. This thing is shockingly fast with the low weight of the car and the high output engine. I used to drive corvettes in the eighties and I think this is substantially faster and it's way more fun to drive. I would trust this car to drive from Detroit to California with no problems, so if you need to go some distance, it wouldn't be a problem. I'm estimating 15K worth upgrades, parts, and effort. The only thing left is to make it pretty. I bought this as a father/son project, but my son has no interest and I don't have the time anyway. Happy bidding.
