When the new 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 debuted at the SEMA show in Las Vegas on October 30, 2007, we decided to build a recreation of the incredible 1970 Dodge Challenger 426 Hemi 5 Speed to be partnered with the new one being delivered to our store! This soon became a obsession for our specailists in the service department. we set out by finding the cleanest original 1970 Challenger we could find and started by completly disassembling the entire car top to bottom. Our Service Manager, Jerry Benfield, who has been collecting and restoring these fine cars for years made this his passion to personally create what has become one of the finest cars available.
Combining the best of the old with the best of the new, this fantastic, one of a kind recreation is more than just another Big Block Mopar. This Hemi Challenger represents modern engineering at its finest, with form & function melded together to create a car that can perform at a high level, with modern reliability.
The Challenger is painted in Hemi Orange paint with the correct R/T stripping. The top has been replaced with a new vinyl one in black . The end result is absolutely stunning!
Equally impressive is the completely new restored
interior. The dash is new with all gauge lenses replaced, the column is is in great shape with correct steering wheel. The bucket and rear seats were covered with a new Legendary interior package. The carpeting used is 100% Wilton wool (black), with Dynamat sound and heat insulation throughout the cabin, new headliner and refurbished panels finish the whole inside of the car.

The engine is the heart of this incredible custom. A New Mopar Performance 426 CID Street Hemi, rated at 465 HP, provides enough power for any kind of driving! Topped by a Holley Carburetor, this engine behaves much like a modern engine. An electronic ignition provides additional reliability, assuring smooth starts and reliable firing. The Original Correct manifolds with heat tubes are utilized to feed a custom bent 2 1/2" stainless steel exhaust, which sounds incredible!
The Hemi feeds a Tremec TKO five speed manual transmission, with a .60 overdrive gear. A McLeod hydraulic clutch was used to provide for precise shifting again all new parts throughout. This Challenger has the correct Hemi Pistol Grip Shifter also. The rear end is comprised of the correct Dana 60, with a 3.55 positraction gear.
The entire suspension, Front and Rear, has been replaced, each piece has been miticulusly restored or replaced with the correct original parts for the Hemi Challenger. All bushings, control arms, linkeages ETC. have been replaced with new units. The rear suspension and underneath vehicle is clean and spotless .
This Challenger stops better than originally thanks to a new front disc brake conversion on the front with all new parts from the brake pedal to the pads, the brake booster , master cylinder, lines, valves, hoses pads, shoes, rotors, drums everything has been replaced. the fuel system has been completly renewed with new tank, new lines all are correct, in order and perfectly installed.
The Challenger rolls on new 15X7 ralley wheels correct for the car on new fresh rubber. In short, this isn't your typical Hemi Challenger clone!
In a few months, the streets will be buzzing with the 2008 Dodge Challenger. And, before long, everyone will be stifling yawns as they begin to see them everywhere. The proud new owner of this custom, one-off showpiece won't have that problem. This is a spectacular car, which combines the all the elements of the original Challenger with the best performance options on today's market.
