Vehicle Description

This is a restoration of a true 1968 Dodge Charger R/T. It has less than 100 miles on it since it was put on the road after work was completed on it in February of 2008.

The previous owner bought this car in July of 2004.  He began the restoration and chose this awsome yellow/black exterior color combination rather than the original bronze/black exterior color. As a result of its stunning appearance I would not be surprised if it wins a lot of awards. The fender trim tag was not painted at the same time so the tag is still the original paint color in case someone ever wants to go back to it.

I do not have the original broadcast sheet but, deciphering the tags and numbers shows that this beautiful 1968 Charger R/T began its life as production order # 135173 and was assembled on April 24, 1968 at the main assembly plant of Dodge in Hamtramck, Michigan.

It is not long on optional equipment but in those days an R/T was the top of the line for Charger and came well equipped straight from the factory. It does have power steering but not power brakes. The automatic transmission's shift linkage is floor mounted from the factory rather than column mounted.  It does have bucket seats and a console. It also has winshield washers.

This Charger is still powered by its # matching high performance 440 cubic inch (factory rated) 375 horsepower engine, which transfers its incredible power to the rear wheels through a 3 speed automatic transmission. During the restoration process the engine was thouroughly inspected. It required some machining and was balanced. As a result of earlier machining it is 30 over.  It does have the MOPAR purple cam with the original 375 horse cam specs.

As it had its original motor I decided to go more for the original style rather than modified or custom. As a result a lot of attention was paid to detail when original parts needed replacement. As an example you are going to find a properly date coded voltage regulator and plug wires.  The positive battery cable is a concourse quality replication of the original.  The car had headers when I first got it. They were replaced with original styled cast exhaust manifolds with the proper casting numbers. Even the red-line tires size is a correct optional size for a 68 Charger, unfortunately it was for the hemi-charger but not for a 440. But none the less you could have seen them on a 68 Charger

Some things can not be found for an exact properly coded or stamped replacement but care was taken to get top of the line parts where that was the case.  As an example the new exhaust system is from Tube Technologies Inc.  The system gives this car a great breathing ability and that nice throaty sound that we all love from big block MOPARs. The closest I could get on lap belts was a brand new set of 1967 date coded MOPAR belts.

So what does this all mean?  Well it means that the car is not absolutely perfect but it is mighty close to a Charger you might have walked up to or maybe even owned in 1968.

There are a few things you may want to do..  One is I have not been able to find a correct replacement for the radio antenna.  While it works fine, the radiator is the wrong part number for a 68 Charger. Lastly the car is not fully road tested so there could be some unforseen things like I know the brakes stop the car with no squealing or grinding but they have not been inspected so I do not know when they or their seals were last replaced.  Even though there are a lot of new or reconditioned parts it is is important that you understand the car is 40 years old and is being offered and sold "as is" and with no warranties. The car is in Kalamazoo, Michigan and you or your agent are always free to inspect the car upon arrangement (just e-mail me to make an appointment).

If you are the successful bidder you will also receive a note book with documentation and receipts from the restoration.  Included with the note book are two original ads seen in 1968 magazines and an original 1968 Charger sales brochure.

Now let me try to answer a question you probably have in your mind.  Why am I selling the car.  It turned out to be quite a nice car.  I like to drive and to show these 60's cars for about two years and then sell them off. But this one got too close to trailer queen status for my comfort. So I am uneasy about driving it for a couple of years and taking value out of it.  I think it would be better to let someone have it now and let them enjoy it for years and years to come. If your serious about your MOPARS you know that a numbers matching 440 Charger is a big dollar car but a wise investment.  The only way it gets better is if it were a hemi.

Review the pictures you will see it is all that.

Good luck bidding
