This High Option 1964 Galaxie 500XL Fastback was purchased new by Elizabeth Moorehead of Walnut Creek California and she was the one and only owner/driver for the next 34 years. Mrs Moorehead purchased this wonderful Galaxie 500XL from the Famous Lafayette Ford in Lafayette California. Lafayette Ford was a well known Ford Performance car Dealer in California and they sponsored the 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 Lightweight driven by Bobby Spears. Bobby Spears went onto to set  several NHRA Records in his Lafayette Ford Lightweight Galaxie including winning the 1965-1966  Top Stock Points Championship!      This Beautiful Samaon Coral Galaxie 500XL was purchased new at Lafayette Ford by Mrs Moorehead on July 20, 1964 for $3400 plus tax and registration fee's. This very Cool 1964 Galaxie 500XL Fastback is nicely Optioned with Rare SPECIAL ORDER Somoan Coral Paint with a White Vinyl Roof and a White Deluxe Bucket Seat Interior, 390-300hp Thunderbird Engine, Cruise-O-Matic Automatic Transmission, Power Steering, Power Brakes, Air Conditioning, Padded Dash, AM Radio, Seat Belts with Retractors, Dash Mounted Parking Brake Light, Clock, Remote Control Drivers Side Mirror, Day/Night Rearview Mirror, Trunk Light, Interior Floor Courtesy Lights, Windshield Washers, Full Wheel Covers, Swing-Away Steering Wheel, etc etc. This One of a Kind 1964 Galaxie 500XL Fastback was purchased by its Original Owner and was always well loved, cared for and properly maintained. I was told that this car was always garaged. The car is Free of any Rust or Previous rust repair. This is what you expect from a California car with its beautiful rustfree Floor Pans and Trunk.....No Undercoating....Original Plastic Floor Plugs and Drains and they look like they were installed 4 years ago instead of 44 years ago! This Galaxie 500XL is a clean Original California car with wonderful options and stunning good looks! I can almost bet the house that you will not see another car like this anytime soon or ever for that matter! This is as unique as it got for a 1964 Galaxie 500XL. The only thing that would make this any cooler in my opinion is if it were an Original 427-425hp R Code car! I guess you cant have it all. The History on this car is as follows....... The car was SPECIAL ORDERED by Lafayette Ford in Lafayette California and purchased New by Elizabeth Moorhead who cared for the car until her death sometime in the mid 90's. When Mrs Moorehead passed away, her daughter inherited the then 34 year old Galaxie and she took the car to the Local Ford Dealer where she traded the Vintage Galaxie 500XL in on a New Ford. The Ford Dealer then became registered owner number two as he loved the old Galaxie and realized that it was a very Unusual and well kept Original car. The Ford Dealer(Owner#2) kept the car for the next 8 years and completely rebuilt the engine, transmission, brakes and beautifully detailed the engine compartment from the frame rails up to the California "only" Air Cleaner. He did a wonderful job with the Mechanical rebuild and the detail work in the engine compartment looks super nice. The Ford Dealer kept the Galaxie as his personal weekend cruiser for the next 7-8 years before he decided to part with his Cool Old Galaxie. The car was then sold to owner number 3 who was an avid Ford enthusiast and Galaxie Club Member.... he kept the car for over 3 years all the while making little improvements on the car and preserving its nice unrestored Original condition. The car was used for family cruises and weekend car events. Now back to the Original lady owner from California. I was told that Mrs. Moorehead Special Ordered this car because she wanted a PINK car and Ford did not offer Pink as a Paint Option for the 1964 Galaxie line. Ford did however offer Samoan Coral for the Thunderbird line for 1964 so the car was Ordered with the Thunderbird 'SAMOAN CORAL". The Special Thunderbird only Paint looks absolutely amazing on a Galaxie. This Galaxie 500XL is a Los Angeles Assembly Plant built car as indicated by the "J" as the second digit in this Galaxie's Vin Number. The car has a SPECIAL 6 Digit DSO on the Door Tag indicating the cars Origin and Order Number. The Paint Code on the Door Warranty Tag is "Blank". The Door Tag reads as Follows: Body 63C = Galaxie 500XL 2 Door Fastback Color: BLANK(indicative of special order paint cars) Trim: 80 = White Interior color Date: Monday April 13, 1964 Scheduled Production Date DSO: 724652 = 72- San Jose Ordering District along with 4652 = The cars SPECIAL ORDER NUMBER(724652) Axle:= 3.00 Conventional Rearend Transmission: 4 = Cruise-O-Matic Automatic Transmission and then the Vin Number: 4J68Z159482 which decodes as: 4 = 1964 Model year J= Los Angeles Assembly Plant 68 = Galaxie 500XL 2 Door Fastback Z= 390 cubic inch 4 Barrel 300 HorsePower engine 159482= the Los Angeles Assembly Plant Sequence number As you can see the car is a factory California born and bred Galaxie 500XL in the most unique of colors with the 390-300hp engine and a wonderful option list. The Body on this 1964 Galaxie 500XL can be desecribed as excellent unrestored. This car does not and has never had any rust or rust repairs. The Floors and Original Trunk are exceptional. The Undercarriage is nice and clean....original and never undercoated so there is no undercoating hidding anything. The body is nice and straight and the lines and gaps are nice. I dont believe there has ever been any serious damage to any part of the car and the car appears to be wearing all original body panels. The car is exceptionally original with the little rubber drains still in the rocker panels and rear quarters and the body plugs still throughout the undercarriage and in the trunk. The Frame is outstanding with no issues or problems and all body mounting areas are excellent. The body on this Galaxie is outstanding with no rust issues. I was told that the car was repainted once sometime in the 80's and it still looks good for a weekend cruiser or cruise night car. Its nice and shiney and will draw a crowd every where you stop but has some nicks and scratches. The Body is Excellent with no rust issues. There is a small dent in the passenger side rocker panel but nothing to get excited about.....other than that, no dents or rust or areas of concern. It would be difficult to find a better Original 1964 Galaxie 500XL with Original body panels and with a rustfree body as nice as this car. The car still looks very nice and Im very proud when Im out driving her. Its not show quality but the previous owner took his share of trophies with the old Galaxie. The Body Panels are all nice and clean with good crisp panel allignment. The Doors open and close nicely and they lock with the Keys. The Windows all Roll Up and Down properly with no binding or bad fit....just a good old Original car. The Trunk Opens nicely with the Key and closes easily. The Hood Opens and closes properly with both locks and latches working just fine. The Grill and most all of the Trim is pretty nice original. There are a few pieces with some minor dings but nothing that looks terible and nothing that cant be easily changed or repaired. The 390 Birds on the Bottoms of the Front Fenders are in nice shape and the Red, White, Blue and Gold Laminted inserts in the Rear Quarter Panel Spears are Beautiful. The Door Jambs are nice and clean. The car still has all of its Original Date Coded "Car Lite" Tinted Glass. All of the front and rear Windshield Trim is nice and clean with no problems, no damage and wouldnt need anything more than a little polishing. The car is equipped with the Hard to find Vinyl Roof Option with Nice Original Vinyl Roof Top Trim. Ive been told that the vinyl roof option was fairly rare on these old Galaxie's and I never gave it much thought but now that Im thinking about it, I dont think Ive seen more than 3-4 early Galaie's with the vinyl roof option over the years. The Original Vinyl Roof on this car still has a nice clean appearance overall but there is some cracking in the roof in the very small area down below the back window. This is the only area where the Vinyl is showing any serious signs of age. Its just the old age of the Vinyl in that area that is the only issue. There is absolutely no rust or any major issues here other than some vinyl thats showing its age and if you plan on keeping the car long term then this is something that you would want to replace. The Correct NOS Vinyl Roof material was located and a beautiful new Vinyl top was made for the car. It took nearly 8 weeks to get the top made for this car with the correct Original materials. This will go with the car and if your so inclined then you can have this done in a day by an auto upholstery shop or you can do it yourself. Its not all that difficult. The Original interior is still in pretty nice condition with minimal wear for a 44 year old Calfiornia car. California cars are notorious for the sun baking the interiors and they are often burnt to a crisp. I owned a 1966 Galaxie 7 Litre car that spent its entire life in Southern California and was never garaged....well the car had nice original sheet metal but the interior was literally burnt and shrunk up so badly from the heat that it needed absolutely everything. The Interior in this 1964 Galaxie 500XL is pretty clean overall and appears to be 100% Original. This is another strong indication of the cars life long care and maintainence and backs the garage kept statement. Your looking at the Original Interior in this Galaxie from its Seats to the headliner, door panels and its beautiful Original Dash Pad with no cracks or warping and still has strong color.....looks great!!! All of the Gauges work properly and even the old Original AM Radio works great. All of the Interior Dash Lights work perfectly and when your driving at night you can see everything very clearly. I was amazed at how nicely all of the Dash Lights up. Im talking absolutely everything light on the Dash Lights up as it was intended from the Gauges to the Clock and Radio to the Heater Controls and every little bulb for the Wiper Switch to the Air Vents and the little lettring lit up in the Headlight Switch.....Absolutely Amazing!!!! The Heater and Air Conditioner both work fine. The Air Conditioning Unit is much like the Original Ford Mark IV Unit and was probably installed very early in the cars life. I guess Mrs Moorehead had a few Hot Summers and decided that she had better get some air conditioning installed in her new Galaxie. It doesnt take more than one Hot Summer for most people to realize just how much they miss cold air conditioning! The Air Conditioning Blows nice and Cold! The Taillights work....Parking Lights and Headlights all work....Low and High Beams work just fine. The Original AM Radio works great. The Turn Signals work fine and Both Sides Cancel Properly when you come out of a turn and the steering wheel returns to shut them off. The Interior lights all work fine as well as the trunk light, Roof Pillar Interior Lights and the Under Dash Courtesy Lighting. The only thing that I can think of thats not working is the Clock. The Clock is typical of most old cars and just outright does not work. Im sure you could have quartz movement installed if it was important to you. The Gauges all work fine with the Speedometer and Odometer both working. The Water Temperature Gauge works fine and the Gas Gauge is working as well. Now there is something that rarely works in these old cars. I should keep my mouth shut!!! The only thing not in proper working order that I can think of would be the in Dash Clock. The Horns work fine...,.windshield washers and wipers...all vents are working fine. This is just a very good original unmolested car thats always been well cared for and now some 44 years later that love and care definitely shows. The Original Drivers Side Remote Mirror works well and the Chrome is Beautiful. The Interior looks pretty nice overall with all of the Instrumentation working properly and all of the Lights working properly. The Trim on the Dash looks nice and clean. The Door Panels are Original and suprisingly quite nice for 44 year old Original White Door Panels. The Seat Covers look nice and clean for Original White Seat covers. The drivers side cover is showing a little wear at the edge right where you get into the car but its barely noticeable. The Console is in good shape as is the rear package tray. Nothing has ever been cut or butchered on this cars interior and its all very clean and servicable. The Engine and Transmission were both Rebuilt and have approximately 7000 miles since the Rebuild. The Drivetrain was rebuilt completely stock and Hardened Valve seats were installed for running unleaded gasoline. The Engine and Transmission both appear to be the very Original with all of the correct components and outside of having the engine and transmission rebuilt and nicely detailed, nothing has ever been touched or removed. The engine still wears its California only Air Cleaner with the the Hose that leads to the breather up front on the air cleaner. The Original Exhaust Manifold Heat Shields are still in place which is one of those things that are always tossed away once the manifolds are removed. Its just an extremely Original vehcile. The 390 Engine Runs Flawlessly. It starts easily and the choke works properly. The engines sounds nice and healthy with a nice throaty Rumble and with no smoke, no valve train noise. This 390 Pulls really nice and has a little more power than the other stock 390's that Ive had over the years. Maybe its the fairly recent rebuild or maybe its just my memory just is not what it used to be. I can tell you without any uncertainty that this 390 Runs really well and sounds great and has a nice rumble out through the Stock Style Exhaust System with the Mufflers in the very back of the car with the small exhaust pipes with the turned down ends.....very nice looking original style exhaust. The Transmission shifts really well and this one Im absolutely sure about....no memory problems or delusuions here....this Transmission shifts really well.....nice firm shifts and if you get into the Throttle a bit then the transmission shifts hard enough to give the tires a little chirp at shifts into sedond and third,,,,,,,,,I was really surprised at how nicely this Transmission shifted. Most rebuilds seem to do them where the shifts are soft and with this Transmission the Shifts are Firm and decisive......dont get me wrong, they are not hard crashing shifts but firm like a good transmission should shift....especially a transmission thats backing an engine with some horsepower. These cars are big and havy but they still move along quite nicely in my opinion. They are not setting any land speed records but a good 390 will run pretty strong. The Rearend if the Original 9" Unit and its nice and clean. The Housing looks good and is not all pitted up like to many rears that you see in old cars. The cars Original Leaf Springs give the car a nice factory correct ride stance. The car sits nice and looks good just the way she sits. I like these old cars with a very subtle rake thats barely noticeable and thats how this Galaxie is. The Chrome on the car is much better than average for 44 year old Original Chrome. There are some minor nicks and dings in a few pieces of trim but overall the trim looks very nice. Please keep in mind that this car is an unrestored Original car thats always been well cared for and loved. The Trunk in this car is super clean and very original. The Original Samoan Coral paint is still nice and clean in the trunk and the Original cardboard quarter panel inserts are very nice. The Jack is in place and is nice and clean along with the Spare Tire. The Trunk Mat was replaced as the Original had become brittle and the previous owner felt it was best to replace it with a reproduction. The Paint on the underside of the Trunk Lid is still very nice and Original and the Original "Jacking Instructions" are still glued to the bottom side of the Trunk Lid. I cant think of much more to say about this old Galaxie guys. Its a very Original car that appears to have had one repaint and the drivetrain was rebuilt about 7,000 miles ago. The Interior looks nice and clean for an untouched Original. The cars owner history is documented and there is Original Documentation with the car such as the Original Bill Of Sale from Lafayette Ford in California along with the cars very first registration card and the Original Owners Manual. There are other pieces of Original Documentation as well. This is a very unique 1964 Galaxie 500XL with its very cool SPECIAL ORDER Paint. The Paint is really unusual and looks very different and different times of the day and with different lighting. It is very bright in the sunlight and tones down a bit as the sun goes down. The colors on this car truly make this Galaxie one of a kind. I have never seen another 1964 Galaxie 500XL with these Paint colors in my 30+ years in the hobby. I saw a 1963 Galaxie 500XL on ebay earlier this year that was painted a True Pink color and the car was in need of a complete restoration and needed major rust repair.and other body work from what appeared to be collision damage. That car was a completely different color that this 1964 Galaxie 500XL.and was badly faded as well with rust holes in the roof. It was an interesting car but needed a complete restoration. That car doesnt come close to comparing with this Galaxie 500XL. This car has a known owner history and the Original Bill Of Sale. The drivetrain is rebuilt and beautifully detailed under the hood and the car is rustfree. This is a One of a Kind Extremely Original and very Rare SPECIAL ORDER 1964 Galaxie 500XL in Gorgeous Samoan Coral Paint with the White Vinyl Roof and the White Bucket Seat Interior with the Z Code 390-4V Engine putting out 300 Horsepower mated to the Cruise-O-Matic Automatic Transmission with many cool Options like Power Steering, Power Brakes, Tinted Glass, Cold Air Conditioning, Back-Up Lights, Padded Dash, AM Radio, Clock, Parking Brake Light, Seat Belts with Retractors, Trunk, Glovebox and Interior Floor Courtesy Lighting, Remote Drivers Side Door Mounted Mirror, Inside Day/Night Rearview Mirror, Full Wheel Covers, Swing-Away Steering Wheel, Windshield Washers and Door Edge Guards. Im sure Im missing something but Im sure you have the idea, This is a nicely optioned Original Galaxie 500XL Fastback that was Special Ordered in a 1964 Thunderbird Color. This is a very unique Vintage Cruiser that you could drive cross country if you were so inclined. This Galaxie is an absolute pleasure to drive and just floats along down the highway. The car is very comfortable at Highway Speeds and seems to like cruising right around 70mph.....i guess its just the cars sweet spot. The car starts easily and runs perfectly with no issues. The 390 Sounds great with a nice healthy rumble....nothing too loud mind you but a nice healthy sound through the correct style Exhaust System. Again the Transmission shifts as good as it gets and the car runs really strong. Absolutely everything works properly except for the Clock. The car has a nice Papertrail with its Original Bill Of Sale and the cars very First California Registration belonging to Elizabeth Moorehead. There isnt much more that I can say about this old Galaxie. Its a nice old Original car with Original rustfree Sheet Metal, fairly nice Original Interior, nice original trim, good date coded original tinted glass along with a long list of options. It just doesnt get any better than this. The car is absolutely One of a Kind. I have absolutely No Doubt about that. Im not saying that there are no other 1964 Galaxie's with this Rare Special Order Paint but I can guarantee that you will not see another 1964 Galaxie 500XL Fastback with this Rare Paint and a White Vinyl Top and a White Interior with Black Trim and a long list of options including the 390-300hp "Z" Code engine. This car has always been well loved and always properly maintained and always garaged. Enough of my long winded description. On Jul-08-08 at 18:39:57 PDT, seller added the following information:

The Original 390-300 Horsepower engine and the Original Automatic Transmission were both rebuilt a few years back by the cars second registered owner, a Ford Dealer.  He did an absolutely fantastic job at rebuilding the complete drivetrain and he also did a spectacular job of detailing the engine compartment from the firewall to the frame rails to the radiator support, inner aprons and the engine itself. This is not a simple repaint of the engine. This is a beautifully done job at rebuilding both the motor and the transmission and the detail work is outstanding. The car is a True California car with the California only air cleaner and other small items which are California built car specific.  There is a bit of mystery around these unusual Coral Samoan Special Order 1964 Galaxie 500XL's.   After much research, I have discovered that there were just a small run of these Stunning Galaxies built under Special Order. They were all Built on the West Coast and all seem to have come from the same section of California.  There were very few of these Samoan Coral Painted Galaxie 500XL built to begin with so just the fact that Ive managed to track down 5 of them including mine is amazing in itself.  It is thought that somewhere between 20 and 50 of these very Special Galaxie 500XL's were built in the Spring of 1964.  I have spoken to the other 4 owners of the Samoan Coral cars that I have been able to track down over the last 4 years and I believe that these cars may have been a Promotional Model for Ford's California Dealerships. The few examples that I have uncovered have all been nearly identically equipped including one 1964 Galaxie 500XL Convertible that is Samoan White with a White Convertible Roof and a White and Black Interior just as my car. The Convertible is also equipped with the 390-300hp engine and the automatic transmission and also has the unusual Console Shift Delete Plate because that car is also equipped with the Rare Swing-Away Steering Column Option.  The 1964 Galaxie 500XL Convertible also has Power Steering and Power Brakes as my Fastback but it does have one very unusual option that my car does not have and thats the extremely Rare 1964 Only Optional Mower Body trim which gives the 64 Galaxie a look that somewhat resembles the trim found on a 1963 Galaxie 500.   That 64 Galaxie 500 XL Convertible in Samoan Coral(Black Paint Code and 6 Digit DSO) is also wearing 100% of its Original Paint and is quite an interesting Survivor.   The car was purchased out of Arizona in 1978 and was a California car before that. This is a truly amazing Survivor car.  The other 3 cars have been almost identical to mine except that one has a White Painted Roof. Yes thats correct, a Samoan Coral 1964 Galaxie 500XL with a Wimbledon White Painted roof and its absolutely original to the car with the only difference in that car is that it has a Black interior. The other 2 that Ive found well I dont have much information on them although I have seen pictures and they appear to be Real Deal Original Samoan Coral 64 Galaxie 500XL's but they are in sad shape and in need of complete restorations.      These cars are very unique and they are one of the biggest haed turners that Ive ever had the privilege to ownand drive.   These cars are amazing drivers in any color.        The car offered here in this Ebay auction is priced below the price of a "good" 1964 Galaxie 500XL 390-300hp car and this car not only has the Stunning Original Samoan Coral Paint Option but its a Rustfree extremely Original car thats always been treated properly. It is a good car guys!   The engine compartment is beautiful and totally complete. The exhaust shields that mount between the exhaust manifolds and the the Cylinder Heads are in place and look like new. The Original Valve Covers look as they they were stripped along with everything else on this engine during the rebuild and the Valve covers appear to have been professionally painted with a Spray gun and not a can and they might have been clear coated as well.    The engine compartment is just so nice and clean, its amazing.  The car runs perfectly and the choke works as it should.  The engine runs really nice and has a nice rumble through the Dual Exhaust which was very nicely done.  The Air Conditioning Works great and it gets quite chilly in the car on a Hot day. The car drives great.     The paint is older and has its nicks and scratches, no major issues, just older paint that still presents itself quite nicely...great for your local cruises or local car gatherings or a great weekend driver.  The vinyl roof is aged and has some issues below the back window where the top is tired. I have a correct Vinyl Roof in the box that will go with the car and Ive had a price of $150 for installation although its not something that needs to be done immediately.  The chrome is original and looks good for the most part.   Its a real deal Rustfree California car with its Original Bill Of Sale and its very first California Registration from the Summer of 1964.  Its a great old Galaxie guys.  cars like this are very rarely found and one in this condition is not something that your likely to see again anytime soon. I hve nice extras for the car also and they will be passed along to the new owner.  Thanks for your bids, emails and phone calls.  The car has a very realistic reserve and its far less than I have into the car. I feel as though its priced to sell.   Thanks again.....Tony 215-499-2693    If your serious then give me a call and we can talk about a buy it now.
