It’s time to sell my 1967 Jeep CJ-5. This thing was completely redone in 2003 by its previous owner. When I bought it from him, he included an appraisal for $12,000 done in 2005. I brought it to my "Jeep guy" when I got it (this is my 4th jeep), he said the value “wasn’t misrepresented.” I just have to get rid of it to make way for a yet-undetermined new toy. Now for the details:
Engine
This thing is powered by a Chevy 350 small block rebuilt in 2003 with about 11,000 miles on it. Intake is through a 650 CFM Holley Carburetor. It has a 2” custom dual side exhaust stemming back from Hedman Headers. The engine sounds and runs great. I don’t drive it much in the winter, but every time I start it up in the cold, it turns right over. It doesn’t burn any noticeable amount of oil either. My kudos go out to the builder. I get complimented all the time on how nice nor "clean" this thing sounds.
Transmission/ Transfer Case
The transmission is a 465 AMC (Muncie) 4 speed with the granny gear first. I typically leave the granny gear alone (don’t need it with this kind of power) and the three gears all shift smoothly and take you as fast as you could want to go in a lifted Jeep. Behind the transmission is a Novak Conversion Kit that bolts up to the Dana 18 Twin Stick Transfer Case.
Axles
Front is a Dana 30 Truss with a Detroit, Rear is a Dana 44 Truss also with a Detroit. Front has Warn Manual Locking Hubs.
Body/Suspension
This thing has a 1 ½” body lift over a 4” suspension lift with a reverse shackle kit. That allows it to easily fit the new (1,000 Mile) 33”X 12.5” Pro Comp X-Terrain tires with plenty of travel.
The body and frame are the only reason this Jeep is called a 1967. Both are in excellent shape for their age, with no rotting of structural members or frame. The Jeep is from Washington State, the previous owner drove it to Virginia after rebuilding it in 2003. Obviously, in ’03, the body was in good enough shape for him to decide to put about $14,000 into the jeep, and it ran well enough for him to actually drive it from Washington.
I have had it for about a year and a half. A year ago I stripped it down to clean steel (it had about 8 coats of paint on it which must have been what protected it so well from the elements). I then took it to a Nissan Dealership for a little clean up, and a new professional paint Job (because I wanted a Nissan color). The paint is the factory “metallic sunset orange” used on Nissan 350 Z’s. This thing looks great, and I had them put on an extra layer of clearcoat, so it shines and is well protected from the elements, trees, and stones. Don’t worry, the diamond plate on the back is not hiding a rotted out rear, there was a custom spare tire holder welded on at one point that was cut off, and covered with a custom cut piece of Diamond Plate. I personally favor the look.
It still has a couple (nothing major, consult the pictures) bends and “scars” from it’s old days. The interior has indoor/outdoor carpet in the front, the rear has been diamond plated and rhino lined. I get complimented everywhere I go about how nice this thing looks. It's a real ego-friendly rig.
Accessories
8,000 lb Warn Winch that could pull it up into a tree if you want. I also have a 52” Hi-Lift Jack I’ll include.
Custom 6 Point Roll Cage made out of 2” Bent Steel Tubing with 5” bearing plates up front and a running 28” X 4” plate in the back.
Turn signals are not hooked up. It does not need them, as it is a historic vehicle so never needs to go through inspection.
2 Jerry cans mounted on the back; one’s water, one’s gas. They come in handy because I don’t have the fuel gauge hooked up. It all works fine (the sending unit and the gauge), and the wires are all there, I just haven’t connected them because I know how much gas is in it at all times anyhow. I can have this fixed if someone hits the BUY-IT-NOW.
CD player in a marine head unit case. (not entirely waterproof, but water resistant enough for normal use) I forget the make, it’s new though, and works well with the two 6 ½” waterproof speakers.
Auxillary Fan- Just in case you get stuck and need to cool it off. The engine doesn’t overheat during normal use, just a precautionary measure.
Full Size Spare- Actually the spare tire is 35 X 12.5, but the rim matches the others.
Bikini Top also included, it’s the only top I use in the summer months. Someone recently broke into the jeep to steal a power drill, and rather than open the door, which was unlocked, they cut through the rear window of the soft top. It will, therefore, need a new rear window section.
As I said before, this thing is a beast, and gets compliments everywhere I take it. I mostly use it for cruising around on the weekends, but at one point it was my daily driver for a month, and filled that role perfectly. This thing is well built and maintained, so anybody can get in it and go with confidence as far as they like.
