Here it is, my rare, beautiful, and beloved Fulvia Sport Zagato on the block. A sad good bye. I’ve been dragging my feet all summer long, hoping somehow that I could hold on to this car, but my financial situation says otherwise. Any way, it’s a 1971 early transition 2nd series car. This car is totally original, with original engine, and paper work that can trace ownership back to the original owner in Italy. This is one of the 600 or so transition models that were built in the early part of second series production. It is essentially a first series body with the robust second series 1.3s mechanicals and 5 speed. This car is truly the best model to have, and when looking for a Sport, I searched for years to have this particular configuration. I have owned it for years, driven it everywhere, and brought it to car shows on both coasts. It placed second best (see award picture) Italian car in the Hemmings” Sports and Exotic” car show this August. I have driven it all over the Angeles Crest highway and southern California, up to Montrey, and all over the roads of New England. This is really a car built with the connoisseur driver in mind, and it has given me tons of pleasure.
In my opinion and of others who own these “gems”, this car has to be among the top ten of automotive milestones in both styling and engineering. I’ve been sitting on my thumbs, wondering when the history books (and the market) are going to figure this out. A Lancia engineering “tour-de-force” combined with one of Zagatos purest styling jobs ever. A spectacular package.
BODY and INTERIOR
The body looks incredible from every angle. The paint is excellent, with the exception of few small spots of paint bubbling and two chips. These are clearly shown in the pictures. There is small shallow dent in the passenger side rear fender that is generally unnoticeable. Again, this is clearly pictured. The paint and hood stripe were done long before I ever owned the car. I had always wanted the car redone in blue, but the red is the original color and the car looks great, so I never had much motivation to change it. The interior is all original. The upholstery has never been redone, and is in excellent shape. The dash top pad has some cracks from the sun and should probably be replaced. The original rubber mats have some tears, but look good for their age. The headliner is new about two years ago. It is altogether, a presentable original looking interior with a little “patina”. The body and chassis are very solid and rust free, with strong rockers and subframe mounts. The front floor on the passenger side has had about the first 4 inches replaced at some point in the cars life. The drivers side in the same location has had about 8 inches replaced. They are solid, lasting repairs.
ENGINE and MECHANICALS
The engine, gearbox, and suspension are fantastic. Exhaust and shocks are fairly new. The brakes work great, but will drag if they haven’t been used in a while. Although they look very nostalgic, the old Michelin MX tires should be replaced due to age cracks. Mechanically the car has been altogether very well maintained, and I have never hesitated to take very long drives at will.
I have described the car to the best of my ability, and will answer any and all question to an interested party. Bidders with low feedback scores must contact me, and I reserve the right to remove suspect bids at any time. I make no warrantees of any kind. The sale will be final. My reserve is set very reasonable, so don’t be afraid to bid if you really want this car. A Paypal deposit of $1000USD must be received within 24 hours of the close of the auction. Full payment must be received within 7 days of the auction close. I have a clear California title that will not be signed over until full payment clears my bank. Transportation and arrangements are the responsibility of the buyer. I will gladly accommodate any legitimate bidder that wants to inspect the car before the close of the auction.
I have tried to represent this car as fairly and accurately as possible, which I don’t believe can be done in just 24 photos, so here is a link to more than 60 pictures of the car. Be sure to check them out!
