This
is a great example of well-preserved Lincoln favorite, which
has not seen much wet weather. She is a real eye-catcher that
just needs a little T.L.C. and some tinkering.
DETAILS
OF CAR:
[
Paint ]
– The paint looks very smooth and fairly shiny. It appears
to match very well, and there are no flaws in the paint. We
don’t know the age of the paint, but it is our best guess
that most of the car was repainted at some time. There does
not seem to be a lot of paint on the car, and there is a
little bit of overspray on some moldings. However, the paint
looks like it was professionally applied.
We
measured the depth of the paint with a paint gauge. Everything
but the hood seems to have 7-10 thousands of an inch of paint
(which indicates it might be somewhat factory paint). The hood
is more like 14.
The
hood is in good shape with maybe a ¼" nick where it meets
grill and a few nicks on the front headlamps covers and a
couple along the edge of the grill. The paint on the back of
the car seems to be intact except for a couple of light nicks
on the right side of the trunk and a couple on the seam
between the quarter and trunk. The sides show a couple of pin
head size nicks on each side and the back corner of the
driver’s door has a couple of long scrapes (scroll down and
click on the 3 smaller photos below to see 100+ additional
photos).
[
Body ]
– The body seems very original and solid. It appears to be
rust free, for the most part, with little (if any) repair to
the body. We went over the car closely with a magnet to detect
filler. The only places that seemed to have a little repair
were around the Continental sign on the left and right sides.
There may have been some repairs there, but overall it is an
amazingly solid car.
Looking
at the fits around the trunk and along the hood, you can see
they line up very nicely and have very nice tolerances. The
gaps look like they might have from the factory.
The same is true of the doors, although the driver’s
door does drop down a slight bit from hinge wear.
[
Chassis ]
– Underneath, the cars looks very solid. Chad poked around
with a screw driver and did not find any noticeable rust
perforation in the frame or on the bottom side. He poked the
left and right sides of the bottom of the trunk, around the
frame where the mounts are, the floor board area, and the
edges below the stainless bottom on the outside body (where
water and dirt tend to collect). It all seems extremely solid.
The
chassis and parts do have surface rust from normal use. Most
of the bottom looks like it was undercoated. The frame rails
were pretty much left natural – they just have surface rust
on them.
In
one of the photos below, Chad scraped some of the undercoating
off, and you see shiny metal underneath. If you wipe off the
dirt underneath the chrome edge, you can see what looks like
original welds.
There
is some dampness around the transmission and engine, but no
signs of excessive leaks. There is a wire fastened around the
left muffler, and you do hear it rattle. There is also some
exhaust noise on the right side, more toward the engine
compartment. It may be the manifold or exhaust connection.
[
Chrome / Bright Work ]
– The stainless and pot metal around the windows is in very
nice shape. It is all intact and in nice condition - at most,
it could use a little buffing. At close inspection, there is a
small dent on the driver’s pillar molding and on the part
around the lower portion of the rear side windows. The pot
metal has a small amount of pitting.
The
wheel opening moldings and lower moldings are in very nice
condition with no significant wear or damage. There is a small
dent and slight dimple in the mirror near the driver’s door.
The
front bumper and grill look nice and straight, but there is a
little scrape in the center. Above right front blinker there
is a little damage to the body molding and a slight crack in
the lens.
The
chrome in the rear is a little more worn than the front. The
molding below the key hole in the trunk has a couple of
ripples. The left rear bumper section has a light dent and
pitting. Overall, the chrome shows very well, but when you get
closer than 5ft, you do see some light pitting and wear.
[
Glass ]
– All of the glass looks like it may be original. There are
a few light scratches here and there. There are some normal
road nicks on the front windshield and perhaps a slight amount
of wiper wear. We do not see any bad delamination or problems,
and overall it looks very nice for being nearly 40 years old.
[
Top ]
– The top looks fairly shiny and smooth with a light amount
of seam separation on the sides. There is a little bit of rust
just starting to bubble on the right rear and a slight cut in
the roof. It appears to be original, and is a pretty nice top.
[
Interior ]
– The interior appears to be original, except for maybe the
steering wheel cover. The black on the seats has fairly good
color with some wear in the major areas (see photos below).
The sun visors are in good shape, as well as the surrounding
supports (they are unique with lights in them). The headliner
appears to be in good condition but there is a 8-9" stain
above the left rear passenger’s head. It looks like it may
clean up, but we don’t know for sure. The door panels may be
a little loose on the driver’s side, but they should be
firmed up without a problem.
The
carpet is still fairly dark and shows well. There are 3-4
buttons in the back seat that have popped off, and the right
rear arm cushion is coming apart from the panel. A little TLC
here and there could really improve this car back to a nice,
all intact, original-style interior.
[
Trunk ]
– The trunk was left pretty much original. The trunk lid
does not stay up by itself, and the inside looks pretty worn
(with a jack, jack stand, and spare tire). There is carpet in
the middle to cover the bottom, but it seems good and solid
(you can tell from the bottom side).
[
Engine area ]
– The engine area looks pretty much as it would have come
from the factory, but it has had new spark plug wires, a
fairly new battery, replacement belts, new water pump, fuel
pump, and radiator. The belt from the air conditioning
compressor is not in place, but the owner is going to try to
install one to see what happens. Call Chad for an update.
[
Mechanical ]
– Chad tested the following items, and they were working
during the time of the listing:
·
Rear
defrost (fan type)
·
Front
defrost
·
Speedometer
·
Odometer
·
Alternator
shows a slight charge
·
Windshield
wipers (washer not working, but may need fluid)
·
Front
power windows (right is a little slow going up)
·
Horn
·
Rear
parking lights
·
Front
right light works, but not left
·
All
4 headlights (headlight open when the car is shut off, but
shut when running)
·
Dimmer
switch
·
6
way seats work on both sides, except passenger’s tilt
These
items were not working at the time of the listing:
o
Air
conditioning (the belt is not on the compressor, but pulley
turns freely)
o
Not
sure about heat on the bottom (heater blows out defroster)
o
Gas
gauge
o
Clock
o
Rear
power windows
o
Power
antenna
o
Cruise
control
Driving
down the highway, the engine seems to perform well, and it
shifts up and down properly. It idles a little rough, but
idles better after it’s been running for a while. (It has
not been driven a lot recently). There is a rattle in the
baffle in the exhaust pipe. If the new owner wants to drive it
regularly, he should probably install a new muffler.
It
drives straight and does not seem to wander left or right. It
runs smoothly, but upon braking there is some pulsation in the
front. We think the left front brake could be hanging up a
bit.
