No Reserve on this stunning four owner Arizona/So. Cal car. This is the 8th car built for the US market. It was air freighted to Southern California when new and sold to a young couple. The couple had bought more car than they could afford and sold it in 1979. The second owner kept the car until he passed away in 1994. It is believed that he named the street they lived on “Lotus Dr” in honor of this car. In 1994 it was sold to the third owner, a life long Lotus enthusiast and racer, and moved to southern Arizona. During his 14 years of ownership the third owner accumulated just 3500 miles.
While in his care, the interior was completely restored, all smog equipment was removed and the engine returned to its proper Euro tune with correct twin Dellorto carbs. The suspension and cooling system was also enhanced with height adjustable coil-over shocks at the rear and a high efficiency radiator with triple fans. This upgraded cooling system has no problems coping with the Arizona heat. The cam belt and idler pulley were replaced and water pump rebuilt in August 2007. It does not have A/C (never did). The paint is original and in very nice condition. The only issues I am aware of are the wipers currently don't work (never been an issue in AZ) and the windscreen has about a 6 inch crack running horizontally at the bottom edge on the driver's side, but it is below the line of vision and can't be seen from inside the car. The window motors work, but are slow.
This beautiful example comes complete with original owners manual, jack, and tools, along with a complete set of factory shop manuals. The original rear shocks/springs and smog equipment are included, as is the original steering wheel which is in great shape. You are unlikely to find a nicer example of an early Esprit anywhere. According to the Feb. 2008 Octane magazine cover story, prices in the UK have already surpassed £30k (that's over $60k) for similar examples. All the looks and performance of a Ferrari 308GTBi for a lot less money, and a lot rarer.
I am not a dealer. I am an enthusiast that buys cars I like. I've wanted an early Esprit ever since seeing the Spy Who Loved Me and searched for years for one this nice, but I've reluctantly decided to sell it because it is a bit too small for me (I'm 6'2"). I have a blast when I drive it, but then am sore for a couple days afterwards. This Lotus, as with all cars I sell, is owned by me, with the title in my name. I have disclosed all I know about the car and its history and any mechanical issues I am aware of. This car may be inspected at my home prior to the end of the auction. I will make a reasonable attempt to make it available, but I do work during the day, so please allow 24 hrs notice.
