As trustee of my late sister's estate, I am responsible for her assets, among which is a l964 Mercedes 230 SL, 6 cylinder with automatic transmission, purchased by her in 1969. I have the 1969 bill of sale and the title. Its entire ownership history has been in Greenville, SC where my sister lived from the mid-60s until her death in December 2006. The car is now at my home in Atlanta, GA. From 1974 through 2006 it was housed within a carport at her Greenville home. I have driven the car locally but less than a hundred miles.
My unmarried sister was the sole driver during her 37 year ownership of the car. Although I do not have substantial familiarity with the car, I want to be as clear, accurate and factual as possible in presenting it for sale. The car was just recently serviced (new plugs and a new five-year battery) by a shop in Atlanta owned by a Mercedes Factory Certified Master Mechanic. He believes the car to be mechanically sound.
In 2001 my sister had a new engine installed as well as peripheral parts at a cost of about $10,245. I have the invoice for that work. The mileage at that time was 162,000 miles; the current mileage is 175,200. The car has a removable hard top and a stored soft top; the body is beige/cream and the interior is tan. The body and paint appear to be in remarkably good condition. The paint on the fenders, doors, trunk and hood has a nice gloss. A rust area is beneath the bottom of the grill and the top of the front bumper. A smaller section occurs at the lower left fender (between two chrome pieces), adjacent to the driver's door. Two small areas are to the left of the tag frame and a small spot on the edge of the lower right rear fender. The interior brown leather seats are in good condition and the upholstery is adequate. There is a working Pioneer radio. The wood trim of the dash is badly worn and the dash itself is average; the steering wheel plastic is heavily cracked. With the exception of the glove compartment/map reading light and the clock, all exterior and interior lights and dash instruments work. Just beneath the dash is a Kuhlmeister a.c. unit that requires a coolant charge. There is significant rust on the front floorboards and restoration would require repair. There are two small pockets of rust at the floor corners in the jump seat area behind the front seats and two small fabric tears at the top storage lever. The trunk has rust only on the right rear floorboard as the picture shows. The aluminum hard top has numerous paint cracks and some rust spots at the chrome and should be refinished. I don't recall seeing the car with only the soft top in use and cannot speak to its condition. Tires are used but adequate. The body appears structurally sound and I know of no significant damage as ever having occurred. I have the original owner's manual (although quite worn) printed in German and English.
The car continues to draw the same favorable attention here in Atlanta as it did during my sister's lifetime in Greenville. My sister had a life-long attachment to the car but what I know of it comes from the invoice records and what I learned from my family. Payment must be made by bank wire transfer to insure timely verification. I will deduct $30 from the winning bid to cover the cost of the wire transfer. Payment must be received within 7 days of auction close, EST. The car must be sold "as is" with no warranties stated or implied. The winning bidder is responsible for all arrangements and costs for receiving the car. I will be happy to respond to all email inquires.
PLEASE DO NOT BID WITHOUT AN OBLIGATION TO PAY SHOULD YOU WIN.
