Vehicle Description

This item is being relisted due to a non-paying bidder (who failed to read the description completely). I have had many auctions ruined by bidders with fewer than 5 feedbacks. For that reason and for that reason only, I have set a buyer's requirement; if your feedback score is less than 5 and you intend to bid, please email me first or your bid will be cancelled.

To save you time from going any further, if you are looking for a perfect MB 300D in mint condition, this one is not for you. Otherwise, please continue.

1985 Mercedes-Benz 300D Turbo Diesel W123.

Description: Light ivory (MB paint code 623) with Palomino MB TEX interior (code 154). 5-Cylinder, 3.0 liter, 123 hp, fuel-injected, turbo charged diesel, single overhead cam, 4-speed automatic transmission, power assisted 4-wheel disc brakes, 4-wheel independent suspension, power sunroof, A/C and heat automatic climate control, power windows, central locking, power steering, cruise control, original Becker Europa II AM/FM cassette stereo with adjustable sleeve height power antenna, electrically heated rear windshield, amplified tachometer, 3-way adjustable front bucket seats, light alloy wheels, front and rear center folding arm rest, halogen head lamps, halogen fog lamps, 3-speed windshield wiper, zebrano wood dash trim and console, front mounted rear dome light switch, Brake pad warning indicator, Illuminated sun visor, Vanity mirrors, full spare. First aid kit (unused)

One owner.  Southern CA car its whole life. Well-maintained. Almost $20K invested in maintenance since new by the same dealership where it was first bought. I have all the service records, receipts, owner's manual, and original window sticker. Odometer (194,030 mi) stopped working middle of 2003. Received 4 new tires in 2004 and it has pretty much been sitting in the garage for the next 3 years (only driven approx 5K mi.) Cosmetically, it’s not perfect.  I have photographed all the blemishes that I can find and circled/pointed out the less obvious. Interior is in over all good condition considering its age; never been smoked in. (And pet free.) The only blemishes are a couple of light scratches and a small tear on the left side of driver’s seat. All seats are firm with no broken springs. Headliner is in good condition except for the dome lamp area and three small punctures in the left rear pillar area. Plastic cover at the bottom of the center pillars has cracks. First aid kit cover and one parcel net are missing. Dashboard as well as center console have some usual hairline cracks.   Driver's door and left rear passenger door have some dents but these dents are difficult to capture in the pictures because there’s no paint damage, just caved in a little. Driver’s door doesn’t stay open (doesn't catch). Rear passenger door panel has a small puncture. There are about a dozen tiny chips (slightly larger than pin points) spread out over the trunk; as a result some rust has appeared on those tiny chips. Hood and left front fender each has a small dent and a patch of paint drops.

Besides the routine maintenance the following are things that have been done: transmission has been rebuilt; vacuum pump, power steering pump, water pump, alternator, starter, radiator, thermostat, A/C  compressor, muffler, rotors, brake pad sensors, glow plugs, ball joints/suspension/lower control arm bushing, valve cover gasket, intake exhaust manifold gasket, oil filter housing gasket, etc. have been replaced.

Mechanically, this is where this car really shines. It drives and handles nicely. Starts right up and shuts right off at any temperature. Does not blow smoke from exhaust at startup or while driving. Idles smoothly at 750 rpm. Transmission shifts smoothly with no slipping. Alignment is true with no pulling during braking and no excess play in steering wheel. Brakes work well without pulling or vibrating at any speed. Engine has plenty of power with the turbo and has ample amount of torque. Highway cruising at speeds of 70mph is effortless. The engine temperature stays around 80C which gives it the longest life of one engine.  The power sunroof slides smoothly and easily and all the power windows and power door locks operate properly. All interior/exterior lights work. Original Becker AM/FM stereo works and the power antenna retracts all the way. All gauges including the clock work. Heater works but A/C just stopped working (the compressor is not kicking in, which could be just a switch or a relay.)  Battery is fairly new. Entire body is pretty much corrosion/rust free. Neither the engine compartment nor undercarriage has been power washed to make them look good.  As you can see, the undercarriage is free from rust and soot. Engine compartment is pretty dry except for the oil pan area (most likely just needs a new oil pan gasket.)

The Mercedes 300D sedan is rated world wide as one of the safest and most reliable cars ever built. 75% of these vehicles sold 25 years ago are still on the road today. 200K miles may seem like a lot for some cars but for this motor it’s just breaking in. It’s known as the “million mile motor” for a reason. It’s put together like a tank. Solid construction of high grade materials. There is no shimmy or shake in the body, no out-of-character vibration, and absolutely no rattles or squeaks from the interior. It’s as if the car was carved from a block of iron. The interior is very comfortable; seats are firm, but well sprung. There is ample space for four adults, and the trunk is very spacious. Windows are large and allow for maximum viewing pleasure from inside the car. The design of the dash is quite striking with its round air vents, timeless clean lines and ergonomics lending a very simple, elegant, uncluttered, open view through the windshield. For safety the engineering speaks for itself. Mercedes has been at the forefront of the car industry for many years and will be for many more to come. Features that weren't even an option for many cars are standard for Mercedes, for example, reinforced bumpers, reinforced doors as well as a drop-down engine and collapsible hood in case of accidents (legendary for a Mercedes). A neat little feature is that you'll never accidentally lock your key in the car because it's been designed so that doors can be locked only from the outside with the key.

An added bonus of owning this MB 300D is that you can run it with any mix of strained waste vegetable oil (WVO) without any modifications! (Not recommended if your temperature dips below 40F.) If you are in a warmer climate, it will take straight strained WVO. Or go to any big restaurant supply store and buy bulk vegetable oil for around $2.50/gal and pour it directly into fuel tank without filtering it. YES, it's cheaper and burns cleaner than regular diesel. (But I’d recommend you do some research before doing it.) This car has never used WVO but more and more people out there are filling their old Mercedes diesels with WVO from their local restaurants for free. (Restaurants usually pay to have their waste vegetable oil disposed of so they'll be happy to give it away for free.) With the gasoline prices reaching $4-5/gal…Imagine the savings you’ll get for the next 20+ years (expected life of this vehicle if properly maintained.) AND it will continue to hold its value years from now.

It has a clear CA title (presigned) and a clean Carfax report. Registration is current (11/08) No smog checks required. (All diesels and hybrids are exempt from smog check.)  Buyer responsible for all shipping arrangements and shipping costs (departing zip code 91791); I’ll coordinate as needed. I require a non-refundable deposit of $300 via paypal within 24 hours end of auction; full payment due within 7 days. I prefer cash but cashier’s check from a major bank will do. Payment must cleared upon pickup. I do not take payment plans. I will store the car up to 30 days for free ($25/week afterwards) as long as car is paid for within 7 days. If you're from out of town, I have no problem meeting you at local airport/bus/train station if you’d like to drive it home.  I'm also willing to drive this vehicle to any location within 1000 miles for $.85 per mile one way with payment in full and your willing to drop me off at the nearest airport or Greyhound station in your area. If you live further than 1000 miles, it's probably cheaper to hire a transport service.

I have 41 photos of this car but eBay limit is 24.  Please click the following link to see those photos:

Thanks for looking and happy bidding.

On May-16-08 at 19:00:52 PDT, seller added the following information:

Some questions have arisen and I'd like to clear them up. First, the only known mechanical issue is A/C. Second, it's never been in any major accident. Third, it leaks oil only a couple drops a week so it didn't bother me enough to fix it. Also I'm not the original owner. I acquired it from the original owner who signed the title over to his son back in Nov '07 to sell the car before the father left the country. The son got side tracked for three months and eventually sold the car to me in Feb '08. I bought it with the intention to experiment with bio-diesel but lost interest along the way. Hence I'm selling it.  And how would I know how many miles this car has put on since it stopped working back in '03? Well, of the last 4 tires put on in '04;  two are still on the car with 75% thread left on them. The other two were damaged and replaced with newer tires with almost 95% thread left on them. BTW spare tire is brand new.  And FYI  As of 5/10/08 there are 110 watchers. You might miss the chance If you are waiting to bid at the last minute. Yeah, it's not perfect but if it were, it'd be valued at a minimum of $8K~$10K.  BTW I now have 70 pictures in the album. If I miss something, please feel free to ask.
