Boy were we cool. Shane and I were seniors in high school, cruising around in a '63 convertible and looking for girls. Maybe the car had some thing to do with it, because we sure got a lot of looks. After graduation, Shane's mom got sick, and his family didn't have time to keep the convertible on the road, so they parked it in the garage.
I always wondered what happened to Shane and the '63 Comet...
Fast forward to about 1 month ago, I am driving by the old home town and there is Shane outside his house, and in the driveway, is the Mercury Comet. The car hadn't seen the light of day in 18 years. Shane has the hood up and explains he wants to get the car started again and to go to a good home. I tell him I will be back tomorrow with some tools and a camera.
Here are a few words from Shane, then we will answer your questions about the car:

Mercury Comets have a big following and many sites are dedicated to them.

-
A web site devoted exclusively to the 1963 Mercury Comet.
-
Vehicle History:
If you have made it this far, there is a good chance you know how rare and valuable a find this is. Although originally slated to be sold as an Edsel, Mercury started selling the Comet for Ford in 1960. In 1963 the Comet was introduced with the convertible, a beautiful addition to the Comet line. In all, only 13,111 Comet convertibles were built in 1963, produced and only a fraction of those had the S-22 option. The body style changed drastically in 1964 making the 1963 Mercury Comet Convertible completely unique.
This car is equipped with a 170 CID straight-6 with a single-barrel Holley carburetor producing 101 hp, and the Merc-O-Matic 2 speed automatic transmission; the tranny is unique to this model line. With the rare S-22 Sport option factory installed, bucket seats, 3 tail lights per side, and other unique upgrades are how she came from the factory.
Shane's father Michael purchased the car in 1984. He spent a year and $8,000 to fully restore the then 20 year old vehicle. Not much is known about the car prior to 1984 and no receipts exist.
Here are photos from the Family Album, Circa 1985.

They drove the car from 1985 to 1990 as a daily driver. In 1990 Michael gave the car to his son Shane just before graduation. Shane drove it for a time, but because of family issues this car became impractical and it sat untouched in there Garage until about a month ago.
The rest of the story is yours to write.
Body and Top:

Body
The best thing for you to do is to come and look; the next best thing would be to study the pictures. Some rust is present down low, and I don't think a single part is show worthy as is. One great thing about this car is the extensive use of a protective undercoating that is on the inner body surfaces. You can see this especially well in the pictures of the trunk. The frame is intact and structurally sound. She is a solid little car, but very complete.

Top
The top works fantastic as you can see in the video below. However, the rear window is no longer attached to the canvas. The Canvas boot looks in good shape and is included.
Engine and Mechanicals
The odometer reads 32,761 miles. I checked the Compression ratio the day we started her after 18 years: 120, 114, 128, 121, 92 and 88. There is a little bit of blow-by as you can see in the video of Shane starting and stopping the motor, but she ran well before Shane put her away. We replaced some of the ignition components last week, and I sand-papered and eye-balled the points to get her running again. The jack and spare tire appear to be original and are included, as are all spare parts.
We were able to fire her right up after the ignition work by running a line from an external gas tank, because the tank is all gummed up. The front wheels are locked, and the transmission leaks a little. The muffler is shot. The battery is not included. The condition of the brakes and other components is unknown.
