1967 MERCURY COUGAR - RARE - ONE OWNER FOR 26 YEARS
Yes thats right i've owned this car since March 1983, when i was still in high school.
I bought the car when i was 17 years old and was working in Santa Cruz, California.
I can tell you the history, where its been, the adventures i had growing up with this car.
I could go on forever, but i think you want to know about the car.
OK SO ABOUT THE CAR
POWER PLANT: It has a stock 289 4.6 L V8 motor that purrs and runs like a kitten. Even thou it has over 300,000 miles. The oil has been changed every 1000 miles since i've owned the car. This car still starts everyday, runs quiet and doesn't smoke at all... The carburator is off a 1969 390 2V Cougar and is close to 400 CMF. The radiator has been upgraded to the 27" A/C model and has been re-corded to a 3 row. Plus, because i live in So. California i installed a 160 degree thermostat so the car never runs hot! The timing chain and gears were replaced a few years ago and to my surprize the original gears had little or no wear. I just wanted to upgrade them when i changed the water pump and timing cover. It also has a high volume oil pump and i put a new factory oil pan on at the same time.
The exhaust has been upgraded from a single exhaust, to all aluminum duel, but there shorty's. They end after the back seat, but stop before they reach the rear axle. I dont know what type of muffler they used, but they sound really mean when you give it gas and quiet at idle. From the front of the car you can't hear it running and when you walk around the back at idle it sounds very strong.
The motor does need some TLC: Little things like it needs a tuneup and the carburator adjusted. As i just rebuilt it not long ago, but i didnt have time to take it in for adjustment. If you dont drive it everyday its hard to start when its cold, but other then that, it starts cold with no problem. The left exhaust manifold is cracked and makes a noise when the car is cold. Im moving to the Philippines soon to live with my new wife. So its time to let someone else take over the keys and restore this Classic!
This is undoubtedly the best car i've ever owned. I hate to see her go! but im getting married.
Ok sorry more about the car...
TRANSMISSION & REAR DIFFERENTIAL: The Transmission is out of a 1968 Mustang California Special 302 V8 model and was re-built by my teacher when i was a collage student at Santa Monica Collage in 1986. It has a 2300 RPM High Stall Tork Converter with a mild Shift Kit, that when it was new, it would chirp the tires when shifting to second gear.
The rear axle differential gears have been also upgraded to a 3.0 from the stock 2.88's giving the car a boost from 0-60 while still maintaining reasonable highway mileage. Sorry i never got around to adding the Posi-traction.
The transmission needs TLC: There is a small leak that will cause the car to not shift right when its low on fluid. If you have ever driven a stick shift you know, to shift you have to let off the gas, to release the tork and sink-ro's. This is an automatic transmission, but sometimes it will not shift to second unless you back off the gas a little. It will chirp the tires when you drive it like a stick and hit the gas hard going into second gear! Reverse will be slow to engage if the fluid is low and its hot, but other than this you car drive the car to the ends of the earth.
I do have a spare Transmission for the car if you use the "Buy It Now" price. if you make your best offer and i accpet, i will list the transmission seperatly.
SUSPENSION FRONT & REAR: The front suspension has been dialed in so tight that the car holds the ground like its glued to the road. Speed bumps are really fun! The front coil springs have had a half coil cut to lower the center of gravity. The front sway bar bushings have been upgraded to poly urethan and make the front stiff. The front rims are vintage 1960's style USA slot Mags and are made of Aluminum, mounted with 2 BF Goodrich tires 195/60 R14's with less than 5000 miles.
The rear suspension has had all the rubber junk removed and the axle housing is mounted directly to the leaf springs. The rear shackle bushings have been upgraded to poly urethan and help prevent rear sway at high speed cornering. The car sits level in the rear unlike other cougars that you see that sag in the rear. The rear rides on a vintage set of 1960's style USA Magnesium 7" wide racing grade Slot Mags, mounted with 2 BF Goodrich Tires 215/60 R14's with less than 5,000 miles.
The car also has new KYB gas charged shocks, front and rear.
OK FOR THE BODY
I HAVE A SECOND 1967 COUGAR THAT I PARTED OUT TO RESTORE THIS ONE
I USED THE FRONT & REAR BUMPERS, THE RIGHT & LEFT FENDERS, RIGHT & LEFT DOORS, REAR VALANCE PANEL, LEFT QUARTER EXTENSION AND THE TRUNK LID OFF THE OTHER CAR. EVERYTHING ELSE IS ORIGINAL TO WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR IN 1983!
I personally restored & replaced the headlights right down to every nut & bold. All the parts from the radiator wall forward were cleaned and repainted semi-gloss black. The chrome trim on the grills was cleaned and the sides repainted the original metallic silver on the inside edges. Leaving the face of the trim bright chrome. I took great care to make sure every nut and bolt was to year and date code to the vehicle. The headlight doors open and close so quietly you wont even hear anything. I started to detail out the back lights, but i only got the left side finished, but again i spared no time. The rear light was striped and the black repainted on the inside edges with the chrome bright on the front. The base of the light was repainted silver inside where the brake lights reflect and the outside of the base a semi gloss black.
THE BODY IS RUST FREE ON ALL THE FLOOR PANS, SUB FRAMES AND UNDER CARRIAGE
THE ONLY RUST ON THE CAR ORIGINALLY, IS FROM THE BACK WINDOW WHERE THE VINAL TOP COLLECTED WATER AND EAT THREW AND A SMALL SPOT ON THE LOWER BACK PART OF THE LEFT QUARTER PANEL WHEEL WELL (REAR)
THERE IS SOME RUST ON THE REPLACEMENT PARTS I USED FROM THE OTHER CAR, WHERE IT WAS COMMON, LIKE ON BOTH DOORS AND THE RIGHT FENDER. THE REASON I USED THE RIGHT FENDER AND DOOR WAS BECAUSE THEY WERE STRAIT SHEET METAL THAT HAD NEVER BEEN REPAIRED BEFORE. THE ORIGINAL PARTS HAD BEEN REPAIRED WITH BONDO. AS FOR THE LEFT FENDER AND DOOR THEY HAD MORE BONDO THAN THE REPLACEMENTS FROM THE OTHER CAR. BASICLY I PICKED THE PEST PARTS OF THE TWO SETS AND USED THOSE... ALL THE CHROME IS THERE AND DRIVER QUALITY.
INTERIOR:
THE INTERIOR IS ORIGINAL EXCEPT FOR THE SEATS HAVE BEEN UPGRADED TO LEATHER SEATS FROM THE OTHER COUGAR AND THE CENTER COUNSEL HAS BEEN COMPLETLY REFURBISHED AND DETAILED.
IT NEEDS A NEW HEAD LINER AND A NEW WINDSHIELD (I HAVE A USED WINDSHIELD THAT WILL GO WITH THE CAR) PLUS THE HEATER CORD NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AGAIN.
THE STEREO WILL ROCK YOUR WORLD. A COMPLETLY BALANCED ALPINE HEAD UNIT WITH AN IN DASH 3 DISK CD CHANGER. NO NEED TO GO IN THE TRUNK TO CHANGE THE DISK CARROUSEL. THERE IS A 500 WATT ALPINE 5 CHANNEL AMP UNDER THE REAR SEAT THAT PUSHES 75 WATTS TO ALL 4 CHANNELS INSIDE. THE FRONT SPEAKERS ARE A SET OF 2 WAYS, 2 TWEETERS ON TOP OF THE DASH AND 2 - 5 1/4 INCH PULK AUDIO WOOFERS BEHIND THE KICK PANELS BELOW, SPLIT BY 2 YAMAHA CROSSOVERS. THE REAR SPEKERS ARE 6X9 3 WAY PULK AUDIO. THE AMP HAS A 5TH CHANNEL @ 200 WATTS TO POWER A 10" ENCLOSED PULK AUDIO SUB IN THE TRUNK. WHEN I SAY THE CAR SOUNDS GOOD I MEAN VERY GOOD.
