Not only is this baby cute as heck, she’s also economical and fuel efficient! She does not gulp gas like those big muscle cars, but she still has smooth, V8 power. She is not the kind of car you see every day; especially since there were only 9,039 built that year (per our research).
Many classic cars are altered over the years, but this girl seems about as correct as the day she was built. Our data plate research shows that she still has the same:
· Exterior color
· Interior color
· Transmission type
· Engine type
This information was acquired through several websites. Buyers are reminded to do their own research to verify this information for themselves:
· Body = 76B (2 door Caliente convertible (bucket)
· Color = J (Carnival red)
· Trim = 65 (Red - crush vinyl)
· Date = 30K (October 30th)
· DSO = 21 ( Atlanta )
· Axle = 4 ( 3:25 to 1)
Transmission = 6 (dual range 3 speed automatic)
The first part of the serial number (4H25K520887) shows:
· 4 = 1964
· H = Lorain , Ohio
· 25 = Convertible Comet Caliente (bucket seats optional)
· K = V8, 289 CID, 4 barrel carb
All in all, this is just a great example of a beautifully restored car that is just FUN to drive!
DETAILS OF CAR
[ Paint ] - The owner explained that the car was repainted 15 years ago. You can tell it was truly maintained properly - cleaned, waxed, given the attention it deserves. It is smooth and shiny, with no apparent flaws, mismatch, or orange peel. There is a 3/16" light bubble above the driver’s side headlight and a small chip in the driver’s door.
[ Body ] -The body looks excellent. Nice and straight, just like it would have come from the factory. The gaps on the doors, trunk, and hood look uniform.
[ Chassis ] – Underneath, the car looks solid and clean. There is a little bit of seepage around the oil pan. The owner states there is a loose connector, and the seepage is power steering fluid.
[ Glass ] – The front windshield has some small pinhead-size nicks, and wiper marks on the passenger side. There are also scratches on one rear passenger window. The plastic window for the convertible top has some very fine abrasions and lines that seem to indicate the top was folded down properly.
[ Chrome / Bright Work ] – The bright work around the windshield, the trim around the convertible top, and the front and rear is in excellent condition. The moldings down the sides from front to rear have various dings, but over all, it has a very good appearance.
The driver’s side body molding has some minor dings and a dent on the rear fender, below the rear window. There is a small 4-5" dent behind the door handle. There is a spot on the right vent window chrome, and some wear showing on the molding on the bottom of the trunk (the rear bumper looks great). There is some light pitting surrounding the tail lights. The black could be cleaned or polished.
The Comet logo on the hood looks excellent, as well as the trim around the grill opening. The paint on the badge is a little worn. The front bumper and the headlight rings look good. The hood ornament has a little pitting, and the turn signals show the most wear on the car. They could be cleaned/touched up, or replaced.
[ Top ] – The convertible top is in excellent condition. We did not see any flaws other than some slight wrinkles. If the car sat out in the sun, the wrinkles would probably smooth out. The owner put the top down for more photos, and installed the boot. The boot is very supple, and everything snaps together well. The top is power operated and goes up and down nicely.
[ Interior ] – Overall, the interior is in very good condition. The seats, carpet, and top has been replaced. The front and rear seat material is extremely supple and in excellent condition. The chrome on the door handle shows some slight pitting, but the window crank is in good shape. The dash pad looks excellent - very clean, supple, and no signs of cracking. There is a little wear on the chrome surround. The bright work pieces on the sides and top of the windshield look good. The bright work latches that hold the visors show pitting. The chrome on the center console is broken.
The carpet is in great shape. Inside the top, all of the structures look good. The window seals look brand new, but the door seals look original, and have some abrasion marks and dents.
[ Trunk ] – When we removed the covering in the trunk, there was some light surface rust. It looks like there was moisture trapped when the trunk mat was scrubbed and does not look serious.
[ Tires and Wheels ] – All 4 tires are steel belted Kelly Navigator radials. They are all size P205 75 R 14, and measure 10/32 for tread depth.
[ Engine Area ] – The engine compartment looks better than new. They could not have come much nicer than this directly from the Ford plant! The owner states that this is the original motor, but it was totally rebuilt and gone through (see pics). The engine has a Holley 4 barrel carburetor. The air cleaner and valve covers are the same way they were when the owner bought the vehicle. Everything looks correct.
[ Mechanical ] – The owner said he changed the oil every 3,000 miles. He also explained about 2 repair spots in front of the rear wheel openings. They were cut out and new metal was welded in. See copies of other service work receipts in the additional photos below.
Also, the owner states that the car steers like it would have new (power steering), and the brakes are also like new (Vacuum booster brakes). The engine seems solid and starts easily. The transmission feels smooth and the drive train seems to be functioning properly.
