1968 Olds 442 Sport Coupe, this car is equipped the most desirable powertrain found in this year vehicle. It has a 455ci motor, M21 close ratio four speed transmission, Hurst shifter and linkage and a 12 bolt possi rear end.
I purchased the car planning to restore it back to original and have a premo daily driver. I got as far as a new interior.Let me tell you what wrong with the car, and I'll do my best to be as honest and candid as possible.
As you can see from the photos, it has extensive body cancer. The front and rear lower quarters are going to need to be replaced. It needs a new truck pan, complete floor pan and braces. There are other small rust spots on the roof and on the trunk deck. It needs a new exhaust system from the manifolds back.
Now let me tell you about the good stuff. The engine is very strong. It'll roast the tires in all four gears. I replaced the rear output seal in the trans and had the linkage adjusted. The drive line and the U joints have been inspect and are in great shape. I had the rear end inspected and the fluid replaced. It's in perfect condition. The interior is brand new. It has new shocks, new upper and lower rear control arms.The carpet kit is in great shape. I have tons of new or NOS replace parts that go with the car. I I'll list a few;
New Hooker header
New frond grill
New Hurst shifter boot
New Hurst T handle shifter w/pattern
New full set of body mounts
New exhaust tips
New set of coil springs
New front suspension (not installed)
This is a GREAT project car. As it sits, NADA has a value of $13,475.00. With some work it can easily bring 30K. Look around and compair apples to apples. Find and 442 with this power train and see what it's worth restored. I hate to get rid of it, but the truth is I'm in over my head.
It you have any questions please feel free to contact me either by e-mail or call me 575-532-5001.

7-7-08 A member asked where the 455 came from, since it was not available in 68. I e-mailed the previous owner and he said it came from a 72 Tornado. It's a very clean install. Another member questioned if it was 350. It's not. If anyone needs the numbers let me know.
7-8-08 A member asked about the dash A/C vents, but didn't see a A/C unit under the hood. There is no A/C. I put that dash pad on because the old was was torn and cracked. I also failed to mention that the car has a new clutch, pressure plate, throw-out bearing and linkage.
7-10-08 Also forgot to mention that the car has a new gas tank, sending unit and fuel lines.
7-11-08 A member asked about the rear end gear ratio, it's not stamped or tagged. When I had the car on the lift I checked it by one full rotation of the rear wheel vs rotations of the drive shaft. It appears to be a 3:90. |
