Vehicle Description

Up for bid is a

stunning Twilight Blue 1970 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible with a fresh 455 cubic inch engine and 4 speed MANUAL transmission.

Please Note: This IS NOT a clone.. It's the REAL DEAL.

Let me start out by saying that this was a 2-1/2 year restoration project.. Not some "hack it together" in a month job that you see so often with these muscle cars. Everything was done right just short of a frame off resto. This was a "Frame On" resto that brought the car to a mostly stripped to bare metal condition.

We just finished this beauty the 1st week of June which was just in time for the HOT ROD MAGAZINE "POWER TOUR". For those of you not familiar with the "POWER TOUR", it's a rolling car show sponsored by HOT ROD MAGAZINE, FLOWMASTER, GM PERFORMANCE, EDELBROCK just to name a few.. It lasts 7 days with 6 different venues which started this year in Little Rock, AR and ended in Madison, WI. The round trip for me was RIGHT AT 2,400 miles from start to finish. I was nervous attempting this on such a fresh car, but we made the entire trip without so much as a hick-up. (except the distributor hold down bolt loosened in Topeka, KS and the timing got a little out of whack. 5 minutes with a timing light and a 9/16 wrench and we were back in business!) There were about 3,500 cool cars that made the whole trip. Next year, Im taking my 70 440 6-pack Cuda! It's an awesome weeks vacation away from the office!

As this bad girl sits now, I wouldnt hesitate to take her cross country. Just for fun we checked the fuel mileage on the trip a few times. I was totally expecting about 9 or 10 mpg with the 455, 4 speed combo, but was pleasantly surprised when both times it came to right at 13.5 mpg!! That's not bad at all for such a car with no overdrive. Average RPM's around 70 mph were 3000-3200. 13.5 mpg and will still smoke the tires about a city block!! On top of all that, she didnt burn a SINGLE DROP OF OIL!!

The folks that I bought the car from 2-1/2 years ago had the 455 completely rebuilt from top to bottom in 1994. Since that time, she's had a total of about 800 miles put on the rebuilt engine before I took ownership. (The car was stored and never driven since 1996 before I bought it) So during the power tour week of June 6th thru the 14th, the car has had more miles put on it than in the past 15 years combined!! I have the build sheet on the engine which will go with the car along with a stack of receipts that total about $26,000 (not including a dime for about 2 years of labor) Im too afraid to total them up even though my wife wants to. On a project like this, you are better off not knowing!!

THE 1ST QUESTION EVERYONE WILL ASK: IS THE CAR NUMBERS MATCHING?

The answer to that is NO. The engine block numbers do not match the last 6 digits of the VIN #. The heads are the "KA" version, which from what I found are "factory replacement heads". From what I can remember, I think they have very close, if not the same specs as the W-30 heads. Please do your own research to verify this as I am not an Oldsmobile Guru. The previous owners do not know what happened to the original engine. It could have been shucked right off the showroom floor in 1970 and replaced by the dealership.. Impossible to tell at this point.

This car however is A TRUE 442. It is a TRUE 4 speed car. It does have the Boxed Rear Control Arms and the 12 Bolt Posi Rear End.

IS IT RARE???

In 1970 Oldsmobile made a grand total of 2,933 442 Convertible Cars. Of the 2,933 built, there were only 549 4-Speed Cars produced. Of the 549 4-Speeds, how many DIDNT have the "Convenience Package: (Air, Power Windows, Power Seats)? Of that number, how many DIDNT come with a RAM AIR Hood Set Up (O.A.I.)? Those numbers I dont have, but Im guessing that more were made with these items than without. She's got to be a really rare duck even though it was built without some of these toys!

ON TO THE REBUILD... HOLY COW, WHERE DO WE START??

Remember the stack of receipts earlier mentioned? From Front to Back is the easiest way.. To try and keep this brief, Im going to hit the major points.

NEW: Front Bumper, 442 Grills, Head Light Bezels, Head Lights, License plate bracket, 442 Nose Emblems, Front Hood Trims, Eyebrow Trims, Headlight Wiring Harness, Turn Signals & Lenses, Side Markers, Wheel opening mouldings (all) Radiator Hoses, Heater Hoses, Fan Belt, Power Steering Belt, Alternator, Thermostat, Vacuum Lines, Battery, Engine Wiring Harness, Edelbrock 4 bbl Carb w/electric choke, Windshield washer resevoir & lines, Windshield washer pump, HEI distributor(was new when I bought car), Hood Hinges, Rear of hood trim, Cowl Screen, High Torque Starter, TCS Trans switch, Wipers, Windshield Glass, Front Rotors, Bearings, Calipers, Brake Pads, Outer Tie Rods, Ball Joints, Steering Gear, Door Hinges, Visors, Rear View Mirror (rebuilt), Door Handles (outer), Door Locks, Door Window Guides, Window Cranks (all), Door Handles (inner), Inner Door Panels/Arm Rests, 4 Speed Console Boot & Bezel, ALL Pearl White UPULSTRY NEW with seat cushions, Carpet, Convertible Top w/Glass Window, Convertible Top Boot, ALL RUBBER SEALS AND WEATHER STRIPPING, Wiring to Conv top pump, Conv Top Switch, Drive Shaft & U-Joints, Shock absorbers, Rear Coil Springs, Full Exhaust from Manifolds to Trumpets w/hangers, Rear Bumper, Tail Lights, side markers, Gas Tank Sending Unit, Trunk light, and a TON of nickel dime items that add up to a TON of cash.. Dont believe me? Just try it and find out the hard way..

When I bought this car, it had obviously been sitting a long time. It was VERY SOLID and Mostly Straight, but the bumpers were dinged up and the front one had a little twist. Both needed to be repaired and re-chromed. I bought New. Still have the rear bumper, but the front one wasnt worth saving. Both front fenders looked straight, but had a hack repair job done to them in the past. The driver's side was a mess after further inspection but the passenger side could be fixed. I bought new (Goodmark). The left 1/4 panel had been replaced by a GM factory panel some years ago. It still had the GM sticker on the inside. The Right Quarter was similar to the left fender.. Looked very straight, but was a disaster under the paint. It was removed and replaced with a NEW full quarter (goodmark). There were absolutely...

NO PATCH PANELS used on the car. It was full panels or nothing.

That was expensive, but doing it right was more important. Kind of the motto on this rebuild.

The car is VERY Straight and the Twilight Blue Paint/Clear Coat turns a lot of heads and gets A TON of compliments. The white striping are decals. I did this instead of paint thinking the next owner might want to make a W-30 clone or something out of the car. I purposely left the big white stripes off the hood bulges. It was a tough decision as the car looks awesome with or without the big stripes.

The wheels I had media blasted and POWER COATED the proper Argent-Silver. I dont think it was until 1971 when the wheels were color coded to the car. I see that a lot anymore. Again, I could be wrong, but am going from what I was told by the guys at "Brothers Automotive".. They are the olds guru's so I followed their advice. The wheels look sharp as hell with the stainless all polished up!! The tires are HOOSIERS. That's what came on the car when I bought it. They look good, drive good and have tread like new. It was a toss up to put some BF Goodrich tires on her, but again, those are very big nickels and dimes.

As far as the ODOMETER goes, It' shows 69,778 miles. I believe these to be correct, but dont have any documentation to back it up. Most everything is new so it really doesnt matter much now anyway.

Things that dont work: The factory AM radio is not hooked up. I had an Alpine Am/Fm/CD/MP3 player installed in the glove box. The center speaker in the dash was replaced with an Alpine 6X9 and two MB QUART 6" speakers were mounted under the dash. Without bending way down, you would never see them. The sound is not anything to brag about by today's standards, but it's pretty good. The Tic-Tock Tach works, but the clock doesnt move. I havent really looked into why. Im sure it can be repaired or maybe just plugged in. The right Turn Signal Cam usually doesnt latch. Every once in a while, it will latch up, but you mostly have to hold it up to keep the right signal on. The left signal works fine.

Speaking of Sound, the exhaust is 2-1/2 aluminized pipe with mini turbo mufflers. There's just a slight rumble to let you know there's a big block under the hood, but nothing obnoxious like Glass Packs. It's actually very quiet exhaust until you mash the gas pedal!

To Summarize, the car looks drives and even smells like new. It's been a long and very expensive 2-1/2 year build, but the end result was worth every minute and dime! You will absolutely be proud to own this car and know that you can hop in it, turn the key and go where ever you want. She has never run hot and always carries great oil pressure!! IT WILL ALSO COME WITH A TON OF ORIGINAL AND SPARE PARTS. SOME ARE GOOD, SOME ARE OK, SOME ARE JUNK. THE NEW OWNER CAN TAKE OR LEAVE SOME OR ALL.
