Series 426, 81 bhp, 288.6 cu. in. L-head six-cylinder engine, 3 speed manual transmission, front and rear semi-elliptic leaf spring suspension, four wheel mechanical drum brakes, Wheelbase: 126"
In its fourth and penultimate series in 1927, the Packard Six gained more power through the use of a "Turbo-Head" with newly-designed combustion chambers, new aluminum pistons and re'designed intake manifold. A hypoid differential gave smoother operation and permitted a lower ride height. Bodies were new and more streamlined, with an integral visor above the windshield.
This Packard was owned and a part of The Astor Collection. It is reported that this car was purchased from Douglas M. Longyear, the Hollywood Packard dealer , by director David W. Butler, whose career spanned fourty years, is known for such works as Fox Movietone Follies (1929), Calamity Jane (1953) and the 1960s television series "Leave it to Beaver." Unfortunately, there is no official documentation supporting this claim. Largely original, the car was repainted and cosmetically refreshened for Mr. Astor in 1995. The radiator shell, headlamps and bumpers have all been replated, but the remainder of the brightwork is original, albeit highly polished. The car carries a Boyce Motometer radiator cap, rear-mounted spare with long grain vonyl cover, and niely beveled wind wings.
The interior is original except for the front seat, which was re-upholtsered some years ago. The engine, believed to have been replaced, is clean, but could stand some detailing, although most hardware is correct. There is a patch on the left side of the cylinder block, which dates from some years ago. The odometer reads 1,134, which is the mileage since restoration.
The car comes with the dealer's dashboard plaque, an old copy of the Packard Six Owner's Manual and an original catalog of "Packard Renewed Cars." There are also two period advertisements and, stowed away in its case in the rear passenger compartment, and original address book with leather cover, pencil and paper. This is a well-preserved car with celebrity provenance, and will be a fine addition to any collection.
This is the car that was at the Packard International Show in Orange California.
It is priced extremely lower than its appraised value and is worth an airplane ticket to view.
