Up for auction is my 1975 Porsche 914. The engine
runs well, but it can’t be driven because the clutch just froze. I am
selling the car for that reason. I
don’t have the time, expertise or garage space to repair the clutch and can’t
afford to find someone who can fix it.
This ‘sunflower yellow’ 4-cylinder has a 2.0 litre engine and a 5-speed
manual transmission. The car handles
incredibly well because of the mid-engine placement. It is great fun to
drive, especially on warm, sunny days when you remove the targa top. If
you are mechanically inclined (or know someone who is!) I think this little car could bring you
years of enjoyment.
Engine
& Mechanical
The car starts easily and the heater/defogger works well
after the engine warms up. Occasionally
there is a slight amount of smoke when you start the car, which (I think) means
it may need a valve job or new rings in the future.
As I mentioned above, the clutch is frozen and I was not
able to ‘unstick’ it, which probably means a new clutch will have to be
installed. This isn’t something I can
do but if you’ve done that kind of work before, it may not be an overwhelming
job.
Before the clutch went bad, I replaced all the shift
bushings and the car shifted easily although first gear has never worked. That was never a problem for me because the
car is easy to drive beginning in second gear.
I believe the car was originally fuel injected but this has
been converted to a carburetor. I
installed a new rotary fuel pump because the other pump was dang loud.
There is a very minor oil leak, but not enough to use much
oil. In 8 months I think I’ve added
about 1/3 quart of oil.
Body
& Interior
The driver’s side rear fender just got ‘re-arranged’ by a
Hyundai Tucson who pulled out and hit me.
This left a shallow dent about 20 inches long that can be seen in the
pictures. Other than that, the body is
in quite good shape for a 33 year old Midwestern car. I have never looked in to ‘paintless dent repair’ but I would
think that might be an option on this dent.
There are also a few small dings and some imperfections in the paint
job.
I am not aware of any place where there is paint bubbling up
due to rust. In fact, there are only
two spots where rust is notable. The
first spot is in the rear trunk, which you can see has been coated with Rust Bullet. There is also a spot on the chassis (on a
corner near the spot where you would support the body with a floor jack).
The interior is in very good shape. The upholstery,
carpet, door panels, and dash are all in very good shape. The car has a
Sony CD player and speakers installed near the doors. The auction includes the nearly new $250 Weather Shield car cover pictured.
If you have any questions please ask before you bid. I
am located in a suburb of Indianapolis so please keep that location in mind
when you bid since you will have to take this car home on a trailer. Please do not bid on this vehicle if you
don't have the means to pay for it.
As I mentioned above, the clutch is ‘stuck’ and because of
that, it can’t be driven home—the winning bidder will have to pick it up with a
trailer or arrange for shipping.
I will expect payment in full by cashiers check, money order
or cash within 7 days of auction. Buyer is responsible for arrangements and
cost of pick-up or shipping.
