The history of Porsche begins with both Ferdinand Porsche and his son Ferry. Not only was Porsche a great designer his interest also expanded into aircraft and performance engines. Porsche began work with Diamler on the popular SSK's and SSKL road racers. Shortly after World War II he and his son were imprisoned by the French and were ordered by the French to help with the creation of the Renault 4CV as well as the Cristalia racing car. When released in 1947 he an his son began work on the sporting variant of Volkswagen known as Project 356.
The first 356, debuted on June 8, 1948, used many Volkswagen parts for manufacturing economy. However, Porsche quickly re-engineered and refined the car with a focus on performance, so that by the late 50's few parts were shared in common between the two marques. Little noticed at its inception in 1948, by the early 1950s the 356 had gained some renown among enthusiasts on both sides of the Atlantic for its exceptional aerodynamics and handling, as well as excellent build quality. It was common for owners to race 356s as well as drive them on the street.
This 1959 356A Cabriolet is truly one of the finest 356's we have ever had the privilege of owning. The vehicle came to us from a retired Navy Captain in the Los Angeles area. He had bought the car from his neighbor in 1968 and owned the vehicle till just last month. As a Navy Captain his standards were very high and the has been meticulously cared for, for over 40 years. Always garage kept, never damaged, or ever missed a service. He used the vehicle as a second car for fun cruises to the beach and runs up through the highland valley's of California. Two years ago he had decided to follow his Porsche club to Reno for a big meet. As preparation for the trip he sent the car into the shop for service. Advised by the mechanic he had the engine and transmission rebuilt, with extensive service to the brakes and suspension.
Shortly after returning from his trip he got very sick. The car had not been driven much over the last year, primarily driven by his son to insure the car would stay running and tuned, he estimates 2500 miles since the rebuild. This is a True California car and the body is laser straight, no rust or corrosion what so ever, floors and battery compartment are very clean. All seems and gaps line up like new and the fit is only comparable to a factory finish.
Shortly after acquiring the vehicle we had commissioned a cosmetic restoration to be done by one of San Diego premier Porsche Aficionado’s. He completely went through the car replacing many new parts, knobs, exterior trim pieces and badges. Including a new interior kit installed by Auto's International of Escondido, Ca. Fitted with Red Leather and tan carpet in the correct pattern.
Powered by it's original 1600cc engine and 4 speed gearbox. The vehicle runs like new and drives excellent. After driving the car for the first time we felt the car performed so well we had intentions of driving the car on the California Millie Miglia this month in Northern California. The steering, handling and braking are fine and we saw no problem in running the car 1000 miles. The vehicle was tuned in preparation for the trip however our Alloy Body 1949 Jaguar XK120 was our first entry and we were just notified the Porsche couldn’t be registered in time. Thus we are now offering one of our personal vehicles. This is a fabulous example and would be a great Porsche to own. We have had several in the past and none that could match this quality of paint, body, interior, and running condition. The vehicle needs nothing, Turn key and go this 1959 Porsche is ready to be driven or shown.
