Vehicle Description

Beautiful, lovingly restored, matching numbers 911 S with original MFI.

You are looking at a very nice matching numbers 1970 911S that has been carefully restored to close to original condition. Chassis number 9111300115, Engine Number 6310212. Approx 108k Miles. Peter Morgan in his “Original Porsche 911” book opens the chapter on the 2.2 models with “By the time we get to the 911s of the early 1970’s we are into the stuff of romance,” and it was a 2.2S that Steve McQueen drove in the opening scenes of the movie LeMans. Well, I can attest to the fact this is a very special era, and my personal favorite for the early cars: very well-sorted dynamically, magnificent 2.2l mechanical fuel injected engine, and prettier than the following 2.4’s by virtue of its bright trim work and Durant door mirrors.

In short summary, this particular car has undergone a professional bare metal respray, complete suspension rebuild with new bushings, it has its original MFI fuel injection with a rebuilt pump and throttle bodies. The engine has been inspected and anything out of spec replaced, the 5 speed (with that lovely dog leg 1st !) has had worn syncros and gears replaced. The wheels are deep six Fuchs that were also professionally restored. I never intended this car to be a concourse car, and it is not; having said that it’s a very nice car, and turns a lot of heads. Friends that have driven it have commented on how nicely it drives, with the smooth clutch and very responsive steering, and when the 2.2 comes on cam, what a rush !

The details:

I purchased this car in 2002 as an unfinished restoration. The car had a lot of work completed by Ed Pimm at EPR, including the body – stripped to bare metal and repainted in its original factory Metallic Blue (paint code 8484), most of the suspension had been powder-coated and rebuilt with new bushings, the engine and transmission had all the internal work completed and the interior had had a new dash, new carpets, re-upholstered (vinyl) Recaro sports seats, and new headliner. Unfortunately I don’t have a lot of detailed receipts from the previous owner but I do have a few pictures of the restoration in progress. After purchasing the car I completed much of the work; I have all the receipts for work done either by myself (I’m a Mechanical Engineer) or by other professional shops. Here’s the list:

Engine and transmission

  • Rebuilt MFI fuel pump by Pacific Fuel Injection (Gus Pfister)
  • Throttle Bodies and linkages rebuilt by Eurometrix
  • All new OEM hoses, oil and air
  • Cleaned and sealed oil tank, cleaned oil cooler
  • Cleaned and sealed fuel tank
  • New electric fuel pump and all rubber fuel hoses replaced
  • New clutch, thrust bearing, cable, bronze bushings
  • New plugs and wires (Magnecore)
  • New alternator
  • New airbox and air filter
  • Battery ??

Suspension and brakes

  • Rebuilt front aluminum calipers (White Post Restorations)
  • Rebuilt rear calipers
  • New discs/pads system filled with Super Blue brake fluid
  • New stainless braided hoses
  • Wheels – Fuchs deep six wheels re-finished by White Post Restorations
  • New Koni adjustable shocks front and rear
  • Professional laser alignment and corner balanced
  • Rebuilt CV joints
  • The car had already had upgraded torsion bars (21mm front, 26mm rear) and turbo tie rods fitted

Bodywork

  • New front indicator lenses
  • Window mechanisms rebuild and re-greased
  • Door lock mechanisms rebuilt
  • New window seals and trim clips and moldings
  • New trunk carpet
  • The car also came upgraded to H4 headlamp lenses and with a Momo Monte Carlo steering wheel

The following are my subjective ratings of the car:

  • Paint – 8/10 – Scratch on the lower part of the passenger side door, small dent on hood near drivers side hinge. Small scratch on front right wheelarch lip - See Pictures. There are no stone chips on the front of the hood (Chips very common on long hood early cars).
  • Engine – 9/10 – Runs really well, very strong, very smooth. Idles well. This is probably because the MFI pump and throttle bodies are all rebuilt and flow bench balanced. The only complaint is very minor oil leaks from the lower valve covers (I retained the original magnesium covers for originality, but you could update to the turbo covers to fix this issue), and a minor oil weep from the transmission I just noticed.
  • Suspension 10/10 – Can’t think of anything I would do to this. Rides/steers very well, brakes are very strong and stop in a straight line.
  • Interior 9/10 – Clock is not working.

Please be aware - I just was informed this is a 1971 model year car - not 1970 as I had orginally stated. It was built in 9/1970.  Aplogies for any confusion.
