This is an original unmodified 1986 MR2 with 186,xxx miles on it. It has the famous 4AGE engine, a 4-cylinder 16 valve double overhead cam engine known for its reliability and free-revving performance. The engine is coupled to a 4-speed automatic transmission. The car was owned by a woman who had it for 17 years, and still has the original paint on it. This MR2 has air conditioning, cruise control, leather steering wheel, moon roof, and electric mirrors. It has manual windows. It has the cool looking exterior options including the ground effects side skirts and rear window visor. I added some scoops on the rear engine deck and they look awesome. There are a few scratches and minor dents here and there, as shown in the pictures. The interior is in very good shape. The tires are almost new and are a matching set. I have a clear title for it.
Engine: Complete rebuild, bored out 30/1000’s by Hi-Tech Performance Machining, new pistons, new main bearings and connecting rod bearings, new oil pump, new timing belt. Cylinder head completely rebuilt by Clearwater Cylinder Head. New composite cylinder head gasket, all new seals and gaskets. New thermostat, replaced heater hoses near the engine, 60%-40% mix of Prestone long-life antifreeze. New distributor cap, rotor, and spark plugs, alternator belt and A/C belt, and air filter. The plug wires are the ones that were on it when I got it, but they work fine. I ran Valvoline Synthetic blend in it for the first 500 mile break-in, now it has Castrol GTX 10w-40 in it. 3,000 miles on the rebuild, and this engine runs perfect, and doesn’t leak a drop.
Exhaust: The catalytic converter needs to be replaced before it will pass smog check. The flex pipe, exhaust pipes, and muffler are all fine, but I have a coat hanger for one of the hanger brackets.
Automatic transmission: New brand name quality Dexron III ATF, complete change including drain torque converter. Drain and refill of the transaxle as well, with the recommended Dexron III ATF. Replaced front transmission seal while I had the engine out. This was just a precautionary measure.
Drive axles: Replaced both rear drive axles with all new (not rebuilt) axles.
Fuel pump: This car had been sitting in a garage for 5 years with a tank full of gas. The fuel pump is in the fuel tank on these cars, and it was frozen after sitting so long. I drained the fuel, removed the tank and flushed it, replaced the fuel pump with a new Carter OEM electric fuel pump, and replaced the fuel filter. The fuel filler hose was replaced, as were a few miscellaneous small hoses coming off of the fuel tank.
Struts: Replaced all 4 strut inserts with new Gabriel Ultra shock absorbers/struts. Replaced a broken coil spring on the left rear strut with a good spring from the salvage yard. I also got a front strut tower brace which came on the 1987-1989 MR2’s and retrofit it to this 1986 model.
Brakes: You have to disconnect the brake lines to get the struts out, so all four brake calipers have been flushed and bled, new synthetic DOT 3 brake fluid used. The disc brake rotors and pads are all fine, no service required. Emergency brake cables were replaced with units from the salvage yard. They work fine now.
One of the electric fans on the radiator runs all the time. The windshield washers don’t work, the back up lights don’t work, and the radio speakers are old and sound like they are torn, need to be replaced. It has the original radio with cassette player in it. The original seats are in pretty good condition, just stained a bit and a little bit of wear on the driver’s side seat. I put some seat covers on it. I also have the original moon roof cover. The windshield has some scuffs on it from running the wipers with worn out blades. The driver’s side window doesn’t roll up perfectly. If you open the door, then roll up the window, then close the door, it’s fine. Probably the track needs a little adjustment. The A/C has been sitting and the Freon leaked out. I replaced the belt and ran the compressor a bit, it sounds OK. The neutral start switch needs adjustment. Sometimes you need to push forward on the shift lever to get it to start. The cruise control doesn’t work.
