Vehicle Description
|
|
I purchased this car in the summer of 2000 from a local family here in Fairfax, VA. It is a restored car that was driven daily for about two years by the family's daughter. She was heading to college so I ended up purchasing the car.
I also drove the car as a daily driver from 2000 to roughly 2005 while my wife used our family Subaru and then later a Jetta. It was a garage-kept baby during this time.
It has not been driven regularly since about 2005, was garaged for only 1/2 of that time, spending about the last 18 months or so parked outside.
The good:
This car was professionally and fully restored around 1998. From 1998 to 2005 it was garage-kept, driven daily and given frequent attention and tune-ups.
The engine is a stock 1600cc from Peek Performance (in Maryland).
During the restoration 1998 resto, the car was put to a very stock and proper 1966 trim spec: the seats and interior were very accurate to the period, it was repainted in it's original Sandy Beige color, correct for 1966, etc.
Many of the components on the car are in very good shape.
Interior is a bit tired but is not torn or trashed out.
Pop-out rear windows.
All glass is in excellent shape and all is original VW stuff.
Whitewall tires, mud flaps.
Needs help:
There are two primary issues with the car as it now stands:
1) It has developed extensive frame head rust. The frame head area has rusted through so the front clip and any associated pan areas will need replacing. Some of the rust has gotten into the heater channel areas as well. When I purchased the car in 2000, it had pretty much zero rust but a small patch started on the front pan/clip area and got much worse before I noticed it. Eventually, it got very bad and is now rusted through. The car will not be ready to go until you deal with the front pan and heater rust areas.
2) The engine is actually quite new (about a year and a half on the road) but seems locked up for some reason. I do not know why, but it will not turn over by hand. It's a Peek Performance engine but isn't running and won't turn over.
Other needs help areas:
Bumpers are showing lots of external rust.
Headlamps are not fully hooked up. Hairline crack in right headlamp glass.
Left speaker is missing from stereo door cutout.
Paint is high quality and will shine up beautifully but the last 18 months in the sun and weather have dulled the finish so that a lot of buffing will be needed to bring it out.
Some rust bubbling in some paint areas.
Other issues expected with a car that has not been driven regularly in a while such as dead battery, etc.
Whitewalls are dirty, hubcaps are off but are in the car.
This should be viewed as a project car. You will have to deal with the rust and the locked engine in order to get it road-worthy.
